Hi Pete

When you are on the stage looking at the crowd know that one in every ten of those people have an anxiety disorder and most don't even know it. Most think it is just a product of their environment. You know, lights, noise, crowd. Those are just triggers. How you treat them dictates how well you can tolerate the stress. Some people actually enjoy it.
CBT can not change the triggers. Those are external. How you treat them is internal. Why you treat them different from others including close friends is due to things such as core beliefs which dictate how you see things and think. Core beliefs start very young and set the road you will travel adding to them as you travel. A subtle anxiety from childhood can be added to over time till it becomes unbearable. And since this is your way of seeing, it is most likely different from say your girl friend who has different core beliefs. Over time two of you can and will build similar core beliefs on some things but how well you do this depends on existing core beliefs. The other thing is memory. This works with core beliefs.
Memory dictates how and why you do things. It has multiple choices. The more skilled you are at using it (imagination, improvisation) the more likely you are to have panic attacks. This is accessing negatives because your mind thinks it is supposed to, due to some trauma or just because a core belief says you are supposed to. This is where the simple gets complicated. But it is all repairable. It is called recovery. It is getting back on the right track even if you never were.

And it works. Five years after my worst panic attacks they are just a distant memory. They are not coming back. No it didn't take five years. Relief came very quickly, reinforcement is on going but mostly sub conscious. You might say because I think different that I'm a different person, not so. I'm still me, I just don't have panic attacks.

Hi Davit

Thanks for your feedback on this. Im prepared for the long haul, and since my last post i got a call regarding an interview for a new job. Terrified of the interview obviously, but Im honestly feeling a bit more positive now ive got therapy/meds in place.

Its just nice to know theres a lot of people out there going through the, well, terror. Glad to hear from you from the North of England. I just made it through dropping off some drum parts (im a musician) at a friends house. Felt like a bit of a baby step, but ill settle for it.

Welcome beauceronblues

You know that as long as you stay within the dosage for your meds they are both okay but mirtazapine may make you sleepy. CBT does work but be prepared for it to be different than you might think.
A shame about the job. The program is 12-14 weeks but that is the information, be prepared for a longer run. No skipping ahead, there are no short cuts.

The object of CBT is to change thought patterns so you look at thoughts and actions in a different light. It doesn't actually get rid of triggers, it changes how you look at them so they are harmless. And in that sense a lot of them just stop being triggers. First off the program teaches you relaxation and coping skills so you can manage easier. You must have these in place before moving on to exposure.

That said, we are here for support and if you stick it out it will work.

Thought id make myself known. Had severe panic attacks for 10+ years now, finally started taking therapy seriously. My therapist recommended this site, and my doc put me on mirtazapine 45mg, and diazepam as a sort of emergency tool. Had the worst attack ever about a month ago, ended up in an ambulance with a 150bpm heart rate, cost me a really good job, but ive got a really supportive girlfriend who understands this stuff. Last ditch attempt really, so fingers crossed. x
