There is a very good movie made using the Surprise. I have watched it a number of times. So glad you could manage the outing.

Davit glad your liked the ship. I thought I would share my day trip and post this pic for everyone today..
What started out as a lesiurely day of fish and chip on the Harbor really became an adventure on the open seas. We visited the Maritime Museums today and boarded 4 ships and 1 boat being  Submarines are called Boats..
The ship in the pic is the Star of India her Length overall 212' Beam 35' Gross tonnage: 1318 Sparred length 280' Maxium Draft: 21.5' Rig; Bark.

She is the oldest active merchant sailing ship in the world and began her life November 14, 1863. Her first voyages took her to India as she helped supply England with much needed cotton (unavailable from the United States due to the ongoing Civil War). Several years later when her ownership changed, she began to transport emigrants to New Zealand as part of England's bid to maintain her superiority over the world's oceans. It was interesting walking her decks today and reading about her history as was exploring the B-39 1974 Soviet attack submarine, the HMS Surprise a replica of 1700's British Frigate,  the 1904 steam yacht Medea, and the grand final was the 1898 ferryboat Berkeley.
We climbed up and down and in and out of stairwells on all these ships/boats to tune of 2.5 miles today..Who knew it was going to turn into a maratthan and me being 58  almost 59 and out of shape it was a challenage, even so I am glad I went on impulse and enjoyed the day..I will try to put some more pic's of the ships/boats on in the Harbor on the bay..

I love the tall ship. It looks so cool out on the sea. Cool and cooooool
Imagine the heat reflecting off tall buildings in the city, ouch.

Man it sure was hot sunny and 90 degrees while walking at the swap meet early this am around 8. This afternoon it is 93 and overcast so who knows, it could mean rain. If not thats ok too because we love the cloud cover and speaking of cloud cover its the perfect time to head out for some fish and chips and maybe a walk on the harbor boardwalk if it's cooler down there..It usually is..

Well you may get rain now since the world weather is out of whack. It gets drier here every year. And our power is all hydro generated. Any one remember the books "Dune".

Hugs,

Nice analogy..Their is a abudance of life in California...People from all over the world have made this their home.

I was born in California and have been here all my life so it is a bit hard to relate to someone coming here looking for fame and fortune.. I had never really read the lyric to this song until you asked. I was just thinking about how we sure don't get much rain in California. Just some of my black and white thinking thats all. Nothing more

I came from a family of blue collar workers who worked hard for a living they were Firefighters, Nurses, Machinists, Machinics, Welders, Enlisted Military and such so it is a bit hard to imagine any one of them coming here with a guitar on there back looking to make it big as a singer song writer or such..These people where my Heros..and there are lots of real heros around the world doing just this same thing..There trying to work and support there families too..There is really nothing magical about California. I think a person can be famous or better yet a Hero to their family and friends where ever they are, by how they live their life and their actions and deeds..

Red,
I'd be willing to hear from anyone else, especially from California!

to me, the lyrics mean, in the state which epitomizes the American dream, that they have little rain, but there is abundant life of many other types.  I looked up the composer's website, and he did so well!

I Never really thought about it before so I looked it up on line after your inquiry..it seems that there has been much talk about the meaning of this songs lyrics for decades and some think it has a hidden meaning..Of course I am sure you know this already:)  What do the lyrics to this song mean to you Hugs?

Just curious:)

Red,
What do the lyrics mean "it never rains in southern California"?

Of course we don't mind Hugs! :)
Do you have succulents in America? I know they're native to Australia and are becoming more popular. They're like a type of cactus and very drought tolerant.

The restrictions were enforced here, luckily they've been lifted for now. Oh yes, one time I was saying how pretty the rain was and my cousin who lives a couple of hours away said "you can tell it doesn't rain much here."

Hopefully soon you'll get a decent downpour.

Kaitie.
