Kaitie..Not to worry..
We were instructed to conserve water several years ago and can water 3 days a week. No more washing down driveways, or letting your water run off and down the gutter into the storm drain when watering your lawn or filling your pool..Just common sense stuff..Not everyone complies but most due..Of course for those that want to spend the money they can always pay the price and waste all the water they want..So I think these restrictions will eventually need to be enforced for the water conservation idea to work. Of course that will mean water police. At this point everyone is on the honor system..

You know the song..It never rains in southern california..thats pretty much true..Of course those of us you live here love to see and smell the rain..it is so rare..

Hope either of you don't mind my commenting, but we don't have water shortage, but I noticed a trend in gardens and front yards. They're using plants which use little water. Some front yards just replace the lawns with concrete and potted plants. Over the long run, the water use, and maintenance(which costs in terms of labour, gas/electric powered mowers) might make it worth it.

I noticed the landlord of one of his properties uses low-water use shrubs so he can manage his tenants and keep them happy.

I can barely get from week to week,and admire his vitality.

Kaitie..it's a little of both I imagine..People just want to make sure that they have water just in case and that their water rights are protected..We do not get much rain were I am at. The cost of water and sewer has gone way up in the cities where I live, so many people have had to let their yards die. Tough choices to make..Our yard is not looking as good as it used to this year either..

Red, that sounds terrible, I'm sorry to hear about the water problems in California. Is this because of the legalities, as in who has the rights to the water, or because of a drought?

Up until a few years ago, we had a severe drought. So much so that our government had to create stricter water restrictions than they thought they would ever have to. Now it's been flooding for past couple of years, so our dams are at 99%. These things tend to go in cycle, I think the terms are "el nino" and "la nina". Something like that.

I don't know if the land is sinking in California but I saw a program on tv about the concrete slab foundations on home cracking because of the drought and heat in Texas..I have never been to Surprise Valley in California, at least not that I know of..We used to just get in the camper and just go at the drop of a hat, not knowing where, so I could of been through there and didn't know it.. Lol...We have a travel trailer now so we have to plan our trips so we have a place to park or camp for the night..When we had a the camper we could sleep about anywhere with no problem of getting hassled..California is not a very RV friendly place, Arizona is better and Oklahoma and Texas are even better..The farther east or south your go from where I live the better it gets for folks like us...We are really wanting to travel this Summer but have lots on our plates right now. I have diabetes education classes every week in July, a sleep study to do and then a follow up with a dietitian and a appt to go over my sleep study to see if I need a cpap machine..and Edd is scheduled to see about getting new hearing aids this Saturday..So maybe just maybe we might be able to leave the middle of August, health and weather permitting..Ther is so much I want to do still and so little times it seems sometimes..but on days like today when I have down time I like taking that down time and relaxing a little with all my dear friend here. I am supposed to be out exercising today but it is in the nineties so better to relax and enjoy life around the house today...There is always tomorrow to exercise..I might ride the stationary bike in the air conditioning house today for a change. I do get tired of all the running around..

From what I have heard even though we send a lot of water to California by opening the flood gates on our hydro dam it still is not enough to refill the Aquafer in California. Is it true that some places the land is sinking. Our lakes formed by damming are going down more every year. There are water wars in the kootenays in lower BC. Some places look like dessert. They make hay and the big sprinklers run all day except the few days when they cut. We have lots of water because we are at the head. I imagine one day they will put Dams on the Frazer too. There was some talk of diverting Frazer water into the Columbia. I don't know if that is still on. The Frazer is a slow river, damming it would put a lot of farms under water. There aren't that many places that would support a dam either.

One of my neighbours moved to Surprise Valley in California.

There is still lots of land in California..The problem is getting water to it and lots of the wells have very poor gallons per minute output and of course there is always the Indian Casinos and water rights law suits.Their are several huge law suits going on in California regarding water rights between the native American Indians/tribal Indian's and non indians and the water rights of private citizens on their own land and government land also. There are also water rights law suits going on in Arizona too..We came across water issues in Texas, Colorado and New Mexico also. People are fighting for water pretty much everywhere and if you live rural with no City water you could find yourself in a big hurt for water. My brother in law had his Well go dry because the near by Indian Casino put in a large golf course.You can haul your water in like his does here in Calif if you have to. They do this in some some cities in Arizona too..There is really no easy answer here at the moment..To move or not to move is not a question easily answered..You love to though...Just got to find the right place and a Good and Clean water supply...

In my area the larger the parcel the less per acre it is worth. Before subdividing, my land was worth a thousand an acre. now the neighbours land that used to be mine is still worth a thousand an acre, but my 15 acres is worth ten thousand an acre. So what people do is buy the big piece and rent out most of it to a farmer or trade for help and live on a small piece.

Of course if you can afford the tax on a large piece of raw land you can do nothing with it. This isn't California, there are few people here and lots of land. Some places you can't even see from the road. Some places there is grass growing in their driveway. One guy gave me instructions to get to his place. He said drive down the road till you see a big rock by my road, thats my place, his road is barely a goat path but the power line leads to a house and buildings among the trees. Mine I have to admit is a lot more than that.

We live in the city and in our city and most cities they have a planning and permit dept..If you are going to do and construction or built a fence in your front yard for example and it is going to run along the sidewalk than a person may need a permit to build in the "Right Of Way". My city requires that you set your fence back 10 feet from the face of the curb, or course if I did that my fence would be running through the middle of my front yard, so we had to draw up a diagram of measurement to scale showing where the fence would be and how high and request a permit to build the fence in the right of way..That is if we didn't want the fence going through the middle of our front yard..So we paid the fees and pulled a permit meaning bought a permit and built our fence and had it inspected by a city inspector and signed off as completed in the correct way.

We did the same thing when we had the stucco and windows done..We could have done like others around here and forgone the permits and inspections but when it comes to selling the property doing things without permits can squash a loan and the deal will fall out of escrow. Plus if it was a fence if the city need to work on plumbing for some reason they can require that you remove your fence or wall that is in their Right of Way..It is always best to call Your Local City building, planning and permit dept before proceeding with any work on your property and they can tell you if a permit is needed for the work that you are going to do or plan on having done and in the United States make sure you use a licensed contractor to do the work unless you are doing it yourself..That way you have some recourse if they take your money and run or if the work done does not pass inspection..

I know lots of info..but it is complicated..Hope this helps..
