Fixing Things(With a Mind that still needs fixing)

Hugs

You are rather lucky, charging disposable batteries causes them to heat up and they can explode. They can also catch the thing they are in on fire.  Nickel Cadmium batteries need to be disposed of properly also as cadmium is very toxic.

Something else about extension cords. The breaker in the panel trips when more than 15 amps is used. Amps times volts makes watts. So a hundred watt bulb uses a little less than one amp. To carry that full 15 amps a person needs a 14 gauge extension cord. Few are. but few things you plug in use 15 amps. Even portable heaters unless they run steady. So if the cord is short you can get by with 16 gauge but it may warm up so putting it under a rug would be a bad idea. Cheap cords of 18 or more gauge are only good for lights. There are adapters so a three prong plug can be used with an old style two prong socket. Cutting off the ground pin will make your insurance void if you burn your house so it is better to buy the adapter.
Older houses had lights and plugs on the same breaker or fuse so overloading a plug in could lose the lights too. When using an extension cord you want to plug it into a circuit with the least load on it already.
I believe in overkill so my little house has a 200 amp panel because of the tools and electric heat and I have 50 breakers.
Still I manage to trip the one going to the garage because my compressor uses 15 amps.

I wanted to plug something into an old house, so I thought I could plug a 3 prong into a two prong plug to use an extension plug.

While surfing on the internet for the answer to the first question, I found a reference to the type of battery I was using incorrectly in a cordless phone, and removed them.  Apparently, the batteries are supposed to be different.  On cordless phones, the batteries are supposed to be chargeable, but I put in the ordinary disposable kind.

I'll sleep better tonight.  Having coupons from a hardware store will give me free batteries too, even though the chargeable kind are more expensive.

And I'm not overwhelmed, for once.

After buying some wasp spray, I went onto the roof to spray their hiding place, after taking some precautions getting a little more covered up.
I also poured some coloured water in a particular spot, to look for a leak, and will check to see if there's been any leakage from that spot.  It's unlikely, since I think there's been ice damming around the eavestrough, but I'm starting with the east-to-test places first, before calling in the professionals.  Unfortunately, ice damming probably can't be spotted.

I also figured out how to slide back the extra window, to conserve energy, since now they can  all fit.

I got a real charge out of finally figuring out how the vinyl windows all fit back into the tracks.  I had previously been able to remove most of them, except for one.  It's a real boost., somehow challenging my negative core beliefs.

Backing up today into the garage, I scraped the paint off the side of my car.  I have to speak to the city about somebody's construction, which makes it difficult to park.  I'm afraid it's too long ago to do anything though.  Nothing ventured, nothing gained, though.

Hi Vincenza,
It's just something I did since I got fed up.  I just use the dormers as storage rooms, but they must be 100 degrees.  So they'd don't look any better from outside.  From inside, it actually looks better, but paper doesn't insulate.

Hi Hugs,

I hope your window project is working as you'd hoped.  It sounds like it's a good solutions and one that looks nicer too?

Maybe it's being obsessive, but I decided to install a very old roller shade to ward off some heat in the 90 degree plus attic.  I struggled to figure out how to install the clips on the end of the shades, but managed anyway.  I'm not sure the heat will be reduced, but maybe I got some sense of control over an impossible situation.  It's also easier to air out by pulling on the shade, rather than fidgeting with an old cloth I'd hung from window corner to corner twice a day.

I finally used a plank to roll tires up stairs and up into my car, so I could avoid strain on my back to change my seasonal tires.  Although it's very late in the season, it's better late than never, and my back seems ok.
