Rebuilding Your Self-Esteem

Ralph,

Challenging that negative inner voice will take practice, don't give up.

The following 10 questions will help you to challenge any negative thought. When you have a negative thought, try to answer these 10 questions:

What’s the evidence that the thought is true?
What’s the evidence that the thought is not true?
What is the worst possible thing that could happen and how would you cope if it did happen?
What’s the best possible thing that could happen?
What would most likely happen and how would you cope if that happened?
What’s another way of thinking about this situation? What else could be going on?
What would you tell a friend of yours if they were in this situation and had the same negative thought?
What’s the effect of believing the negative thought?
What would happen if you didn’t believe the negative thought?
What are some alternative thoughts in this situation?

Members, please feel free to share your tips on keeping positive!

Alot of challenging later...

Mom of 3,

Perhaps you can use your writing to your advantage.  To challenge your negative thoughts it may be helpful to write down a list of your negative core values and the corresponding correct value in it's place.  Members, how do you challenge your negative thoughts?

Diva news...

Diva,

Good to hear you have taken time out for yourself with friends and your mom .  Have you taken the new med yet?  If so, did you get an allergic reaction?  Keep us posted.

Mom of 3, many people struggle with starting or stopping medications.  In general, most medications of this nature take time to build a therapeutic level in your system. As it does, the effect  it produces becomes more pronounced and stable.  Did your doctor advise you to stop taking the Celexa?  You may want to consult your doctor about stopping your meds and perhaps require a change in dosage or a different medication.  Let us know how the appointment goes.

Starting over again

Ralph,

Welcome to the Depression Center and thanks for sharing your story.  I'm sure alot of people are reading your post and finding solace in knowing that they too are not alone in this.

You mentioned having difficulty with your finances and in finding affordable treatment/therapy options.  As Josie mentioned, there are many clinics that offer low to no cost treatment.  You may also want to seek the assistance of a social worker who can help you attain access to these places.  Are there any social assistance programs in your state or area of residence that can help with your financial situation?

Let us know how you are doing.  We look forward to hearing from you again!

Mood Tracker

Dear Members,

The Mood Tracker is a very important tool that can help you note changes in your mood - and it can help you and your therapist begin to see exactly how you're feeling. It's important to use the Mood Tracker daily because it's very hard, if not impossible, to track your mood the day after because we often forget the minor details - especially if you're depressed.

Are there any bright spots in your day at all? Do you feel depressed 100% of the time? If you're depressed 99% of the day then make sure you use your Mood Tracker to note what you were doing for the 1% of the day when you momentarily felt not as depressed. This is hard work, but if you use the Mood Tracker you and your therapist can begin to work on slowly making changes in your life that will decrease your depression and increase the amount of time that you feel better.

Starting a new med

Windsybarbie,

Thanks for the update and sorry to hear you are experiencing much pain.  I'm glad to hear that you are avoiding driving and have family and friends to assist with the transportation.  Dizziness, drowsiness, etc. are common side effects of the analgesics and it is important that you make slow position changes to prevent falls.  If these symptoms become severe, please notify your doctor.

I hope you get the time off work.  Let us know how you are doing with the meditation/relaxation and the CBT exercises...sounds like your on the right track!
