Hi Bernard Its a good question. In general, both techniques work. However, while distraction works in the short-term, distraction alone will not work in the long-run. In the long-run gradually facing your fears and experiencing your anxiety ("going with it") is what works best (exposure work). Distraction (including breathing techniques) can be a good way to start to feel some control over your symptoms and "surf" your panic attacks, especially when they take you by surprise. However, eventually your goal should be to do exposure work without distraction or safety behaviors. Hope this helps.

Hi Ann, Thank you for posting us your concerns today :). Ann, have you been able to visit your family doctor with these concerns? If not, then it would be helpful for you to talk to him. Your Doctor knows your health history the best and he may have some helpful points and information regarding your present situation. This support group will allow you to discuss your questions and concerns 24 hours a day 7 days a week. We are an open-minded positive support group. We are happy to have you aboard! Ann, if you look to the left you will find the heading "TOOLS". You have free access to these tests. You can complete them and take them to your doctor if needed. Hi Sky, Thanks for the kind words :)! You are indeed right when you said we have a great community here...so welcome!! Hope you don€™t mind if we ask you a couple of questions? Have you been diagnosed with anxiety attacks? Are you presently seeing a physician? If so, before your next visit try our Anxiety Test. This test can be found to the left of the screen under the heading "TOOLS". The Anxiety Test is not a diagnostic tool and is not a replacement or substitute for a physician's advice. The purpose of the test Sky is to prepare you with information that you can present to your physician. When you're finished the test, you can either print your Final Report or email it directly to your doctor. Feel free to roam the site and be sure to ask us any questions you may have. Hi Hopeful, Thanks for posting your thoughts today. Have you been able to discuss these thoughts with your doctor? If not, then it may be a good idea to visit him/her to discuss why you are having these thoughts. If you go to our Anxiety Test (to the left of this screen under "TOOLS") and answer the questions, you can then print them out for your doctor to see. This can help you elaborate on your thoughts and fears with your doctor. Please feel free anytime of the day to continue to post your thoughts.
