Our Community - let´s grow it!

Hi Ashley,
threads to significant support groups. eg. Depression, Bipolar, return to work etc. Have seen some clean up and this is great.

Also not removing whole email b/o hyperlinks, can used inexpensive firewall that makes hyperlinks just as text.
Especially with mental health, do not want our community spending significant time with email and then having WHOLE email removed. This is not necessary and very detrimental.

Also MHCC has excellent resources for e-health in relation to mental health initiatives.
Definitely worth  a look.

Been off for 3 months....

Hi all,
According to the Mental Health Commission of Canada, we are the greatest resources to this psychological SARS of the 21st century, I have been reading some posts and hear of the stigma and discrimination. This is against the law.

If you feel this is occurring use your union, professional organization or Ontario Human Rights Commission, government etc. This is how we as a group can catalyze change.

Finally getting help now but feeling like I´m going nowhere

Hi Teacher chick and Ashley,

I know exactly what you are saying. I was diagnosed with depression/anxiety in my 20s but did NOT need hospitalization till my 40s.

I worked in an amazingly therapeutic work environment and was on my way to my doctorate when I changed hospitals and moved to a "toxic" work environment. The horror stories begin there as I voluntarily disclosed to the management (as some knew in my old hospital) and suddenly even though I had more experience and education than the manager, I was "flagged".  Too many horror stories and I will continue to work to the best of my ability to ensure others do not experience this is their work environment.

I do not know if you are Canadian, but a recently developed standard called the Psychological Health and Safety in the workplace Management System is gaining a lot of momentum.  This is why I call myself csaz1003. This is the standard.

We have the opportunity to be the best resources for ourselves and others to push for implementation.
Bell Canada has ALREADY had a return on investment far greater than they ever expected;

Teacherchick-I understand so well. 20 years, I loved my work, then suddenly the depression and anxiety overwhelmed me in this new environment. We work greatest portion of our lives, I sympathize so much.

My prayers,
Nancy

Does depression worsen with age?

Hi all,

Just an FYI. Peer reviewed studies (a plethora) have found that actually older folks like myself have less problems with depression.  I am working on my doctorate and doing a lot of research.

Some of the theories, the ability to conceptualize problems through experience. In other words, better able to NOT make mountains out of molehills. Also, natural development of better coping skills through experience amongst other theories.

I personally hold on to this research. As I said is ALL PEER REVIEWED and from dedicated sites likes EBSCOhost, ProQuest, CINAHL etc, NOT wilikpedia or google:) Gives me hope for the future.....

Does depression worsen with age?

Thank you Samantha.
Was dx in 20s, no hospital like mum and sis as I was in such a healthy working environment.
Over 20s year, I soared and garnered multiple degrees and certifications, was on way to doctorate in 2007, moved to another hospital and disclosed to the WRONG PERSON.

Suffered first hospitalization in my 40s, I had NEVER experienced health care such as this....nurses scr4aming at each other, students removed b/o toxic environment etc......so gave this researcher/educator time to learn more about my illness and also spurred me on to go back to my doctorate after being told I needed intelligence testing (the horror stories are unbelievable)

My prayers were answered when I became an ambassador for the Mental Health Commission of Canada and the Standard was born.  Am still living the horrors, but this is what keeps me going-I need to keep this from happening to others,

Finally getting help now but feeling like I´m going nowhere

To all, we are the best resources for change,  We understand, Goal setting is a priority,

Also, if you are Canadian, Americans do have access to the CSAZ1003 as well, setting goals at  ur workplace to adopt a mentally healthy workplace. I am a case study and the research is plentiful, work culture can be proactive for mental health as well as assist with timely and effective recovery of mental illness.

God
bless  all on this journey,
Mental illness can be a journey of recovery!!!!

BELL CANADA-Lets talk day January 28th 2014

To everyone, if any time, please tune in to Bell as they have dedicated ( for the third year) a whole day of programming to mental illness.

BELL CANADA has adopted the CSAZ1003, psychological health and safety in the workplace management system and has sent a return on investment far greater than they expected before one year! This is phenomenal in the business world, normally roi (return on investment) takes years.

I am fighting to adopt stand to health care. Imagine once rns, docs understanding mental health and mental illness- the TRANSFRENCE to our patients, families and communities we serve.
