New

Hi. I'm new. I clicked on an ad in Google because I don't understand what's happening to me. I think I'm ok, but I wake up in a sweat during the night with a feeling of being really afraid. I don't remember the dream, or if I even had one to cause it. All I know is that I am really afraid and perspiring. I have to get up and try to relax in oder to fall asleep again. I know this must sound strange. But it's been going on for a few months every now and then and leaves me with a spooky feeling. Can anyone help?

I did the test, and it points to post traumatic stress. I've dealt with a lot of things in the past and can't see where any one of them is the cause of these night attacks. Can it be something I can't identify? I work in a downtown area and see things like fights every now and then. Things like that get to me, maybe?

New fear

This is going to sound strange to those who've been there maybe, but I'm fighting a new fear. I went to my family doctor and he's referring me to this fellow who works in a psychatric hospital. My doc says that they will probly send me to the sleep disorder clinic there too. Now I know it's for my own good in the long run, if they find something, but when I called to make an appointment and they asked me for my name, they said they were making a card out for me. It hit me then that I would now be registered in the psychiatric system and that scared the hell out of me. I'm afraid of my boss finding out as it could mean my job. So I mumbled something dumb and hung up in fright. How do people deal with this? It stopped me dead from going on.

New fear

Thank you for the replies. I guess when I think about it, my fear is that the insurance company will let my boss know. I've decided not to put it on my insurance for the time being. The Sleep Disorder Clinic is a place I expect the consultant will eventually send me, but first I have to go see him at the Psych Hospital. I was going to forget it altogether, but last night's events were worse than before. I took the test again, thought about the answers and it gave slightly more involved results. My interest though is finding out how people might have dealt with this nighttime stuff, waking up like a bolt in a cold sweat, with a terror I've never known before. I usually get up and take a drink of water or milk, but I don't get calm again. In the morning, I feel as if I've been hit by a bus. I was late for work today, so I know I have to do something about it. How does this cognitive behavior work? Sorry to be a pest qith questions.

Mild Attack

I wake up in the middle of the night with them, Victoria. It's so awful scary. I lead a fairly busy life and this really cuts into my work performance to wake up feeling stressed. Sara, what kind of things do you write in your diary? AnnMarie suggested that to me, but I wonder howo this will help, other than put a fix on the date and time?

Keeping a diary

Hi. In a few other posts I can't locate right now, some of you recommend keeping a journal. I understand that it will help to keep a track record of them, but Red (I think it is) mentioned including what I eat. I never though about food at all! But since my attacks happen at night, I'm begun to wonder about this and what kinds of food might contribute to them, or what kinds can lessen them?

Keeping a diary

Thanks so much! I used to have funny dreams when I ate food heavy in monosodium glutamate a few years ago when I was eating at a particular restaurant. I'm going to keep an eye on this. Maybe I'll find a link. We never know, do we?

Concerned

What kind of work are you applying for? Most places ask you to drop off a resume and then if they're interested, they'll call you for an interview. Is your resume up to date? If you don't have one, a local employment office might help you with that. If it's the thought of leaving the safety of the house to plunge back into the workplace, I wonder if adding a preparation step to it, like volunteering at the Cancer Society might help to ease you into it? There are so many places that could use your help, even if it's for a little while. There you would meet a few other volunteers and get some people confidence back, if that's what's nagging at you?

Well, Well

Oh I know I'm a big chicken about making that step to get help through psychiatry. I took the test again, this time more carefully, and brought the printed results to my family doctor. He brought me into his office and checked it out then and there online. He said he was rather impressed with it. As a result, he called the psychiatrist and booked my first appointment. Without realizing it, he made it for my maiden name, cause that's how he knows me anyway, which works out well all around. So my boss won't find out if I don't put it through my insurance.
