The Everest Analogy - For All Who Are Struggling

Todash You're a poet! Wonderfuel analogy. You talk about that bought the t-shirt feeling after 365 days. My mate gave up for a year, and, yes, had a cig to celebrate and show how he had cracked it, and , yes, I know you know where this is going, was back on within a week. Took him four more years to quit. Still he's off now and seven years on he's about 2,500 days ahead of me. But it goes to show, you can't let your guard down. Keep inspiring all us newbies. I wish I could have stayed in bed today

Hi Cassy, how are you doing? I'm on day 18 now and it is getting easier. Days 2,3,4, round there I found really tough and wondered about giving in. But I hung on and am getting some reward now as the urges are reducing and I can start to focus on the benefits - all those reasons we decided to try to quit. Good luck Dave My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/30/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 18 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 450 Amount Saved: 123.75 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 22 Mins: 4 Seconds: 7

Massive cravings, help!!!

Gawd, where did these come from? Finished work, suddenly desperate to smoke. Went home, done this, done that, and been absolutely gagging for a fag for 5 hours now. It's awful, like day two all over again. I don't know where this has come from. And I am really fed up about it. I thought I was well on the way - gradually getting better and easier, and starting to think I can succeed with this quit; but the fact that I feel like this makes me feel like I've accomplished nothing and got nowhere. And actually I suddenly feel a lot less optimistic about succeeding with this. I'm not at all sure I can put with much of this, it's really hard. I hate it. Oh this is so disapponting. I could hardly feel more upset if I'd smoked. Massive cravings, help!!!

Well, good morning everyone and thanks for all the replies! I only saw them just now, because pretty soon after posting the original message I fell asleep in front of the PC. A couple of glasses of wine probably had something to do with it but I think it was mainly mental exhaustion from fighting that smoking urge. Anwyay, I never did master smoking while asleep (if I could, I would have, I assure you) so that's another eight hours, and here I am into day 20. Cravings are back to where they were before last night's horror attack, so just a bit unpleasant, but manageable and certainly worth the upside benefit. I'm pretty shocked by how tough it was last night. Maybe I was becoming complacent. Well I'm not complacent now. I am also less confident. I guess that won't be the last crave like that. On the other hand I suppose that, now, it won't be the first crave like that either, so maybe I'll be more prepared to handle the next one. Question for you old-timers that have done 100+ days; it does get easier does it? Honestly? I don't relish a lifetime of experiencing that feeling, even if it's only spasmodically. Now some replies to all your supportive posts. Unhooked, what a nice comment about hand holding. I am hanging on grimly. MJ, not just me then. Well you keep going and I will! Moss, I'm off to look at Lainey's post now, thanks for the tip. Alohakeia, yes to both questions. Friday after work is when I can feel the pressure come off and it used to be a favourite chain smoking night. And something did happen - not work but ex-wife playing some unpleasant tricks. Long story, not for here. Either or both of those could have been factors I suppose, although it didn't really feel like a direct connection. I felt like I just needed to smoke. Sparky, now you mention it, I don't really fancy doing days 1-19 all over again..... Josie - I was in bed pretty much after I'd pressed the button to post! Quite a neat way past the crave actually, although I suppose not a long-term solution. Lainey, I've heard a few people mention deep breaths. I'll try them next time it happens and I can't go to bed. Sue, if deep breaths doesn't do it. I'll work through your list! Thanks again all, you are so kind and supportive. On towards day 21. REALITY!

Hi Lainey. The bit of your message that I've pasted below is really great encouraging stuff. It is true is it? Promise? You're nearly eleven months now; can you remember how long it took you to get to there? I had a horrible evening yesterday and was really shaken up by it. I posted elsewhere about this and got some great responses. Above all though I have to believe what you've said below is going to come to me too. "You start to wonder, Am I ever going to win this battle? Could those little voices just shut up already? Will I ever have calm silence in my head again? Well it does come, you all of sudden notice that you have forgotten about smoking for a short period of time, then the times get longer and longer and the little devil gets quieter and quieter. Before long, he can only whisper."
