I'm 37 and have smoked for 18 years. In 1995, I quit for 6 months-then a wild company meeting in Vegas with an open bar did me in and I fell off the wagon all the way until now. I've had enough of being a slave to a cigarrette. I have been on Zyban for about 2-1/2 weeks now and feel that it is finally reducing my cravings, as I've cut back to about 1/2 to 1/3 pack/day. Getting some nicotine gum for the cravings too. I'll smoke my last cigarette tonight after dinner. I'm going to place my last butt and the crumpled pack wrapper in a small clear plastic box and keep it on my desk as a reminder. Cigarettes Not Smoked

Everyone: Thanks for all the kind words and useful advice. Well...I smoked my last cig after dinner as planned....I burned that baby all the way down to the filter... :eg: I ate one piece of 4mg nico gum last night to get me through the evening. I've got a couple of good things going for me to aid in my cessation: #1 I did not smoke in the house. I always went out onto the deck or patio. Therefore, I have no real smoking associations inside the house-such as watching TV, working on the PC etc. #2 My wife is a non-smoker. The big first hurdle was this morning's coffee...well, I thought I'd change my usual routine of smoking my morning cig with coffee on the deck sitting on the wicker chair-so I avoided the deck all together. I poured my coffee, poped a piece of nico-gum and immediately went upstairs and got on the PC to check mail and surf a bit (and to occupy my mind from smoking). Surprisingly, my cravings have not been as bad as I had feared. It seems the Zyban has kicked in, and that combined with the nico-gum is working pretty well. I originally thought of using the patch, but finally decided to go with the gum, reasoning that if on the patch only and a craving hit me, I simply have to let it pass and try to distract myself. With the gum, when I get a crave, I can actually DO something to appease the crave directly, and in addition, I think that mentally I'm replacing the cigarrettes with the gum...creating a different association when the urge to smoke hits me. Well, I'm on day one and doing very well so far...we'll see how well all of my armchair philosophizing works against "Mr. Morley" going forward. ;p My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/26/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 1 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 36 Amount Saved: $1.45 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 5 Mins: 28 Seconds: 41

Hi phiber, I'm also smoking my last tonight, I think I've got four left in my pack! I'm not insane with worry yet and have really worked on having strategies in place so that I won't be caught off guard! I too am tired of being a slave to my habit. I wish you well! Let me know how you're doing!

Congrats on your first day! You are right....stay away from those places that are triggers and switch your routine (especially for the first week or two) Sounds like you are committed and thinking this out. Welcome to SCC!
