LOL, I guess that does sound funny doesn't it! What I meant was, we shouldn't be cutting alot of calories when we're in recovery. WE need our immune system as its best to help us recover quickly! Sorry for the confusion. I'm pretty darned sure that calories don't boost the immune system, Lainey. Oh my gosh -- DON"T increase your calories, please, when you quit smoking. That's the exact reason that we gain weight -- too many calories in, not enough calories being burned off. Calories needs differ by each person. I'm a little less than 5' tall. I sure don't need the same number of calories as my 6'1" husband. In all "diets", when you stop using them, you will begin to put on weight again. That's why adopting a healthy eating plan is the way to go. A diet implies that there comes a point when you have reached your dream weight and you're done...you can go back to eating doughnuts now. NOT. There are several sites that weigh the pros and cons of various "diets". I suggest doing some research on those. Xena, About 200 calories less. You can do this by reducing your intake or increasing your level of physical activity to make up for the 200 calorie intake. Danielle, Bilingual Support Specialist

That's a good question Xena. Nicotine supposedly burns about 200 calories, so we need to adjust for those. Now I am not a nurse but I really think when you are in recovery, you would need more calories than normal, (to boost the immune system.) I didn't worry about the weight during the first weeks, it did level off for me at about five months and now I am working on getting back down. Some people will lose weight, others gain only a few, every person seems to be different, as does their quit! Hope this helps Xena! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 222 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,550 Amount Saved: $2,342.10 Life Gained: Days: 27 Hrs: 4 Mins: 54 Seconds: 57

I know that our metabolism changes when we quit. How do we figure out how many calories we need now we've quit? Lainey & Unhooked This diet is the Atkins Diet, a lot like the South Beach Diet... I only want to drop about 25 lbs.. That would put me on the heavy end of the scale for my height..It would actually been my average weight most of my life. The food is great if you love protein.. My problem is that i LOVE LOVE anything sweet with real sugar.. What an adjustment, I just have to try something??? Grandma I fill for you on that counting WW.. I know that is the best diet for you in the long run... And I may join you if this does not work. Good Luck... to everyone working on weight loss & sticking to this quit.. Lainey I'm doing the WW too and for a distraction from smoking figuring out the points takes care of lot of it. I bought the calculator and after a week got the companion book so many to add up. Be careful, doodles. That sounds a lot like the diet my friend was on a couple of years ago. She lost quite a lot of weight really quickly on it but started to gain it back immdiately upon including everything again. She continued to gain and is noe far moer seriously overweight than she started out. I have seen & heard of this happening to other people as well. I have read that, because carbs are what we burn first for energy, depriving your body of them for that long causes a change in your metabolism and you burn protein & fat instead. That's what causes the weight loss. But then when you start eating carbs again, your metabolism is confused and goes into "survival" mode where it burns everything more slowly. I'm not saying that will happen, or even that it's the same diet, I don't know, but be careful.
