To Patch or not to Patch?

17 years ago 0 1985 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Mr. Ed I used that patch somewhat. I first reduce my intake to 4 cigaretts per day over a two week period. I then quit and used the 7 mg (lowest dosage) patch for about 2 hours per day for about a month. I found using the 28 and 14 mg patches made me feel real anxious (too strong). Actually, Mr. Ed, I think that some peoples' program emphasize being smoke-free and others' emphasize being nicotine-free. I've been in 12 Step programs where one or the other has been emphasize. I used CT this time, partly because I wanted this quit to be more difficult than the quit I had 17 years ago for two years where I used NRT. I did quit smoking right away, which for me was a big victory, because I didn't really believe that I could be smoke-free. This time, I wanted to remember just how freckin difficult this quit is. CT. I was really physically sick. I wonder if there is anybody else out there in addition to CobenFan who has quit for more than 100 days using laser therapy. I've only been non-smoking for 8 days but I think this really really really helped. Interested to know.... I am amazed at the countries that are so supportive of efforts to quit. I don't know if it's Tennessee (Bible belt AND tobacco capital), but my insurance pays for NOTHING!!! My wellbutrin is covered if used as an anti-depressant, but not for smoking cessation (I can skate around that issue) no patches, inhalers, gum, etc... You would think that paying more for smoking cessation would = less money in the long-run for smoking-related illness. I do admire socialized medicine! I wish the USA would head that way, but there is too much political $ tied up in insurance!

Hey, Mr. Ed, Now I am on the very lowest 7mg patch and neither of the step downs were any big deal. The 7mg patches are soooo small! It's like putting on a postage stamp! I only have 12 more days to go and I am fairly sure it's going to be fine. I have been having more junkie thoughts lately but not because of stepping down on the patch but because I am going through big carreer changes right now. Anyways, Thank you for your help! I don't have a 100 days. But I do have a very successful quit thus far. So if you want to add my experience, cool. If not, no biggie. I used the patch for the first 3 weeks. It did help me through the initial feelings of fear I think. But once the fear was gone I didn't want the drug in my body anymore and decided to go cold turkey instead of continuing to 'step down'. I went from 21 mg a day to 14 mg on accident to nothing. When I look back at my craving diary, my cravings quit once I took my patch off. I am not saying that my triggers/memories went away. But once I took the patch off I didn't have trouble with my triggers turning into full blown craves anymore. My quit became much easier once my mind was fully mine again.
