I agree that those statistics are very depressing. And I tell you, I think they are just talking about me! For the last 10 years, I have tried to quit at least once every year. I tryed everything and nothing. I think that I am just so fed up with it now that this is it. My mom is soooo sick with COPD and I have lost two uncles with heart problems and strokes and blood clots. I'm tired of dealing with it and I need to get to where there is something else to think of besides smoking and smoking related illness. So I'm sure that soon, I will be there. I have to be the 5%. Anyways, if all that is true, who is a mathmetician? If 5% quit, and I heard the stat of 450,000 a year die, If we could get no new people to start, how long would it be untill there would be none left? Has anyone ever heard a stat of how many new people start every year? Just curious, Mama My Milage: My Quit Date: 6/1/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 14 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 587 Amount Saved: $79.8 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 13 Mins: 19 Seconds: 14

I came up with 28.48 years. My Milage: My Quit Date: 6/1/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 14 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 588 Amount Saved: $79.8 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 13 Mins: 26 Seconds: 7

Ok, I found a stat that 3000 kids a day start smoking. Now if 450,000 die each year from smoking, 3000 a day start (1,095,000 a year) and 5% accomplish quiting 2,250,000, when will smoking be dead? I know someone out there likes to figure out this kind of thing. Illegal drug users can check into a rehab center. Legal drug users can't. It is all a part of the big lie. I bet if nicotine addicts could check into a rehab center the statistics would be much higher. Unfortunately that is a sobering statistic. Because I had failed before at quitting, I did go to my doctor and spent 45 minutes going over all of my options so that I could actually succeed at quitting. I am on an NRT and believe me, I do not see it as a crutch but a way to quit. I know I will need to wean myself off of the NRT but at least I'm taking it one step at a time and not corrupting my lungs with smoke. My goal is to become that 5% that do succeed. Thanks Cyberduke! good read. and Breaking Free.....and believe it or not I did ask my doc to check me into a clinic. (he laughed and thought I was joking). I bet there will be clinics in the future. You know how we tell our kids.....I had to walk 5 miles to school, we will be saying when I quit smoking I had to go through hell week, heck week and withdraws! I think it is politics too.....Bet there is an EASY way to quit, but like oil.....they want us to keep supporting the tobacco companies! Just like oil it does generate BIG BIG tax bucks. All I want is to be part of that 5 percent. Incrediable how this addiction and the recovery from it is. I will get to be part of that 5%! Weaning off the NRT is doable - I did it. You are doing the right thing cheermom - keep it up! The NRT's just fall away when you're ready - it's a piece of cake - really. Just don't rush it.
