Week-end Prep!

Davit,

It is difficult to change it to an I want to if you really don't want to. I guess it comes down to why you don't want to. I mean, I wouldn't go and study a degree in business or law because it's simply not something I enjoy, and a 9-5 office job would never suit me either. But most of the things I've been avoiding is because my anxiety doesn't want me to do those things.

Arthritis would be awful, not only the pain but the swelling and immobility as well. It's great you won't let it get you down. The strange thing for me is that when I actually am injured, I feel even more determined. About 18 months ago, I broke my arm at the base of the shoulder joint. It was my left arm, and I'm left-handed but I insisted on doing everything myself. It took me 15 minutes to put a lid on a container at school! Yet anything to do with my stomach almost paralyses me with fear. The mind is funny like that.

Definitely, I've done all the exposure before but I've found doing the CBT on this site a bit of a struggle because I've never done it before. In overcoming anxiety, you can't do one without the other. In the past I've only been doing one and it only keeps the anxiety at bay for a while until the stress becomes too much again. For so long I believed that it was because I was weak and I punished myself for not being strong enough to "control" my anxiety. Since I started filling out my Challenge Forms, I've found the exposure so much easier. The change is unbelievable. When I'm worried about a situation, I challenge all the thoughts and worries I usually have. It puts things in perspective.

Kaitie.

P.S. I've never been in an ambulance, but I know that the whole fast-paced panic of those in the ambulance (the paramedics, patient, family members) would make me feel anxious and claustrophobic.

I Call It Success

Shari,

Well done! There won't be any stopping you when your health is under control again :) Sounds like you are having a very busy week. Although there have been a fair few negatives, which I know would have caused you a lot of anxiety in the past, you've been able to stay positive and take things as they come. I'm very proud of you :D
Hope it all works out for you and your friends and family.

All the best,
Kaitie.

Week-end Prep!

Davit

Sorry I didn't reply sooner, I haven't checked the website for a few days. I like your statement "we are a product from our past". Without some of the experiences I've had, both good and bad, I wouldn't be who I am now. I prefer the person I am now to the persons I've been in the past. I said persons because I have tried to be a lot of things in the past, I guess it's all part of being a teenager and growing up. I'm a lot nicer than i used to be.

Definitely with the sink or swim exposure (funnily enough, I've also heard it referred to as 'flooding'), I would swim straight to the edge of the water, get out and keep running. If someone were to force me to go to lunch in the middle of a crowded restaurant today, I wouldn't last long at all. But I know it's something I will be able to do in the future, as I have before.

It was funny when I broke my arm, the bone I broke is called the humerus! I was 16 at the time and playing the park with my much younger cousins, when I fell 6ft from the top of a slide onto my hand with my arm straight out. At the hospital, they gave me 2 panadeine forte and a nurofen and because I'd never had those pain killers before, I was high as a kite. The high had well and truly worn off before I went to school the next day though haha.

Using a distraction isn't necessarily cheating, it's more like making sure you're well prepared for a test. There are some safety behaviours I use which I can't live without at the moment but I have noticed I rely on them a bit less now. I'm really enjoying going on my outings now, and making a reasonable sized dent in my savings ;)

Same here, I always take a water bottle and a source of sugar with me. I'm not actually diabetic, but if I go for more than 4 hours without eating, my blood sugar drops and I get the shakes and it can get to the stage where I faint. I hate it when my stomach is in knots too.

Aw ouch! I'm glad you at least made it home. It's awful knowing you've done some serious damage. My body instantly went into shock with my arm, I remember walking back to the bench where my family was sitting and I couldn't see anything at all, it was all a blur. As soon as I threw up though, the shock kind of disappeared and the worries started. I'm kind of glad I went into shock though, because I didn't really feel any pain. It was almost like a protection mechanism.

That's the best way to do things I reckon, there's no real point doing a job you don't even enjoy. As Castle says on my favourite TV show, "the trick is to find work that feels like play."

Haha I love the "it's not navy seal training"! It's great having doctors who make you laugh, or are just genuinely nice. I'm so glad everything is working out for you, it seems like you're in a really good place right now.

Aww you're making me smile at the iPad screen like a goof!! Hahaha.

Movie lines which impacted me

This thread is me all over! I actually plan my study times around when my TV shows are on, it's my way of unwinding and keeping my sanity. :D

Revenge and Castle have some really good scenes. After Roy Montgomery (the captain) dies in Castle, Detective Beckett reads the eulogy, and she says "Roy taught me what it means to be a cop. He taught me that we are bound by our choices. But we are more than our mistakes. Captain Montgomery once told me that for us there is no victory, there are only battles. And in the end the best you can hope for is to find a place to make your stand. If you're very lucky, you find someone willing to stand with you."

I did Google that by the way, I haven't memorized it. Haha.

If I think of any more, I'll get back to you :)

Consequences of Stress

Hi Ashley and Shari,

Those symptoms sound very familiar. Lately my jaw has been giving me a lot of trouble, my bruxism has been bad. My cheekbones are sore, my face is swollen and I had terrible neck and shoulder pain yesterday. I'm seeing my dentist next Tuesday, I've made the appointment for 4pm as I tend to feel at my best in the afternoon.

I have heard of the S.M.A.R.T goals before, on a few leadership camps I've done with Guides and school. They really help :)

I've been having trouble with my digestive system for the past year, so I eat lots of light, healthy foods. Shari, when I had my anorexia, my dietician told me to eat healthily so I can gain weight because anorexics tend to compensate if they eat something unhealthy by exercising more, or eating less later. Before I started seeing her, I never realised I did this, so for years we were trying "fattening" foods and weren't getting anywhere.

The four areas you mentioned sound right Shari. For different people they mean different things, but for all of us, if we're lacking in one of those general areas, we won't be balanced. Even as an atheist, spirituality still has meaning for me. I love the Buddhist philosophy, and believe in Darwin's theory of evolution. It's not so much I don't have any spiritual beliefs, but more of a compilation of various things that have meaning to me, and I can apply through my own experiences.

Consequences of Stress

Shari, this site really is a great place. Religion can at times cause drifts within our society which I don't entirely understand. We all have our spiritual beliefs for the same reasons, and some are even based on the same principles. When did it become less about finding a purpose and more about being right? Wow, that really hit me hard. I'm definitely guilty of that. .

Hugs, it really is a delicate balance. I realised that a couple of days ago, I lifted a water drum which is a bit less than half my weight. Explains the shoulder and back pain, I must've pulled a muscle or three! Haha. I'm almost looking forward to the dentist though, having swollen cheeks and a painful jaw might be a thing of the past for me soon.
Look after yourself too Hugs!

Expressing yourself creatively

I've had a few ideas for paintings and drawings lately, but it's been so long since I've actually done those things. I'll have to get back into it again.

My brain tends to be over active, I always need something to occupy it. Its a good sign though, if I'm feeling bored again, it means I'm not spending as much time focussing on anxious thoughts. I've been doing a lot of cleaning and organizing around the house, but I find that I often don't need to physically tire myself out. The mental strain of doing assignments, or even working on a painting, is enough to do the trick.

Expressing yourself creatively

Hi Shari,

I love Harry Potter too, although I wasn't into it right from the start. Universal Studios is definitely somewhere I want to see, and the Harry Potter set would have been so much fun. The castles truly are amazing aren't they? There's something about watching the movies that draws you in, and you almost feel a part of it.

I'm interested in painting landscapes and portraits, although the book I really wanted about drawing and painting landscapes is out of print and I haven't found anywhere in Australia that sells it new! Another thing I've wanted to try is portrait sculpture in clay. There's a lady in Brisbane who teaches some classes so I'm hoping to do a road trip there sometime.

Tornado siren? That in itself sounds scary! We actually had several tornados across the East Coast earlier this year, I didn't even know it was possible to have tornados here..

Consequences of Stress

Hi Shari,

That's the main reason I've tried to distance myself from religion itself, as in I try not to conform to a certain religion. I feel some religions, or just a small percentage within those religions, expect others to adapt themselves to the religion, not the religion to their individual lives. It's almost all or nothing. I also feel that those who don't conform are oppressed and some issues, such as mental illness and homosexuality, are swept under the carpet.

Exactly, I thought believing in God's existence was meant to be a way of uniting everyone, not to cause segregation and prejudice.

Aww thank you! You're so lovely Shari

Kaitie.
