Dealing with the Negativity of Others

Hi Hugs and Davit,

Everyone has the capability to be both positive and negative, just as no one is all good or all bad. It's yin and yang. So really, you need to surround yourself with people who balance you out, and who you balance out as well. To quote Castle (from my favourite TV show) "Yin needs yang, not another yin. Yin yang is harmony, yin yin is a name for a panda."
I'm no fun on a Saturday night either, the rest of my friends drink (the legal age in Australia is 18) and I don't drink at all so they call me soft. Fun is whatever you want it to be. :)

Your poor friend Davit, it would be so hard having it looming in the back of your mind like that. I think it's hereditary in the sense that you're genetically predisposed to it. Like dementia, it's not certain but it's more likely than someone that doesn't have those genes.
My great uncle who is heading towards the final stages of dementia, we think it was because he was an alcoholic for most of his life. I've never heard of the bacteria theory before, so that's quite interesting. I wonder how the drugs that slow the decline of dementia work then?

New - Almost Can;t Cope

Hi Bettinia,

You sound a lot more composed than you give yourself credit for, and I'm sure you'll be able to achieve your goals. It's not fair for your siblings to treat you like that, you have every right to grieve as they are and the legal side of things were understandably pushed aside. There has to be another solution in regards to your father's house and the legalities. Why have they placed all this stress on you?

You must be proud of your son, and even though you'll have an empty nest that is something you can hold on to. Focus on what you do have.

I became slightly dependant on a benzodiazepine myself, known as Zyprexa (Olanzapine). I felt I wouldn't be able to cope without it but I have ever since I threw out the pills a few months ago. I'm glad you're aware of this risk though, and your doctor is supportive.

Stay positive Bettinia, you're so much stronger than you think you are!

Davit

I hope she doesn't let this prevent her from having children. I guess it's a case of nature vs nurture too. Not everyone with certain genetic factors end up with the illness.

It's amazing those microplasma can survive at all without a cell wall. That's very interesting.

Turn that frown upside down :-)

Red,

Australia is so lucky to have access to free health care, and Medicare levies that reimburse most of those expensive specialist costs. We do have very long waiting periods on elective surgeries, some up to five years or more, but our government is working to fix this (supposedly). Indigenous Australians get pretty much everything for free here, and complain if they do have to pay like the rest of us, which annoys me.

I never realised how bad healthcare actually is in America until I saw an episode of Dr Oz the other day. He went to help out at a free clinic in Los Angeles, apparently there are more of these clinics around too so it might be good to consider looking for one near you. There was one lady who had breast cancer for three years couldn't afford the expenses of seeing a doctor. By the time Dr Oz saw her, the growth was the size of a grapefruit and actually ruptured the skin because it was so large. When she took the dressing off, he had to sit down because he was in shock. He's done quadruple bypasses but this affected so much more than that. It was awful.

We have free breast screen clinics here and they send out reminders every 2 years when you're due for the next one. I hope the US adopts a similar scheme soon. No one should have to go through what you guys have to.

Dealing with the Negativity of Others

Vincenza,

My psychologist told me at my last visit that I'm not a classic case of an anxiety disorder. That normally people with anxiety can't bring themselves to do the things that make them anxious at all. Yet I've had periods of anxiety where I can't do them, and periods inbetween where I have been just like everyone else my age. I see it as like if your immune system is low, you'll get a cold and then have to fight it off. When I'm really stressed, like in my final years of school, it makes me more susceptible to the panic attacks coming back. I also tend to not take time out to relax when I'm stressed, which of course makes it worse.

We've started Dad on natural sleeping tablets which have helped to an extent. They've made him happy, albeit a little too happy and he follows Mum and I around, wanting to help out with whatever wer're doing. I know I should be happy that wants to help out, but all I really want is some time to myself and with us both spending nearly all our time at home it's hard to find that. Mum has more of a social life than me haha.

Davit, the microplasma is something that I find fascinating. I'm enrolled to study a Bachelor of Health majoring in Biomedical Science next year at the uni in town. I wanted more than anything o be a doctor, or a medical research scientist, but I'm not sure anymore. In that aspect I'm having a crisis of confidence, but I might start another thread on that one.

Irritating Qualities about myself - in others

Hey Hugs,

My old psychologist used to say "the qualities that annoy us the most in others are our worst qualities." So yes, I would even go as far as to say everyone feels that way!

It's like when someone says to two people who are squabbling over something silly, "You two are as bad as each other!"

Kindness is contagious

Aw that's so cute Shari! I think Davit has earned the right to say "I told you so" on that one . Hope your day keeps getting better, the bar has been set high already.

Turn that frown upside down :-)

Davit and Red,

If it were up to our Liberal party, all hospitals would be privatised here. They're cutting thousands of jobs, yet expect us to be able to afford higher living expenses and healthcare. Queenslanders voted in the Liberals for our State Premier and as much I hope it doesn't happen, I have a feeling we'll be getting a Liberal Prime Minister for our country as well in the September election. I know it's risky talking politics but that's just how it is, Labour is for the poor, Liberal for the wealthy. Unfortunately, my family and I are on the poorer end of the scale.

You're lucky to have your health insurance Red, at least that's one positive. It's hard knowing things aren't as regulated as they should be. The specialists are probably under a lot of pressure too, and are forced to see patients as a chart number, not people.
There is always room for improvement no matter where we are. Although there's no such thing as a perfect world, we shouldn't have to settle for less than average.

Pump It Up

Chores are my way of pumping it up. I actually enjoy having a project and feeling productive. My cleaning and organising list is a whole page long, and I'm drawing up my plans for a veggie garden in my backyard. I was going to do the measurements for the timber today, but it's been raining all day so I sorted out my wardrobe instead.

I'm too unfit to go to the gym. ;)

Postive signs of Change

Those seemingly little things are most often the biggest achievements of all. I've noticed that I'm coping better with actually going to certain places that I wasn't able to a few months ago, but I'm still having trouble with some social interactions. A couple of weeks ago, I was grocery shopping with my mum when I saw a good friend of mine from school. I didn't feel ready for the "bumping into a friend at the shops" situation, so I avoided her even though I'm sure it would've been fine.

I'm glad you felt more comfortable with those interactions. Pushy salespeople are so difficult and I know going back to when I first signed up the site, it would've been hard for you to say no. Well done!
