Coming to Grips with Emotions and Smoking

16 years ago 0 598 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi ML,
You are coming up on  your 7 month anniversary! It is still amazing to me that I did not smoke through some of the situations that I have had to handle this past year. I know what you are saying. "This situation is so stressful. Why should I add to the stress by not being able to smoke?" But, the hoax is..smoking causes extra stress, it does not relieve it. This addiction to nicotine had us thinking upside down and backwards! We want the cravings to go away. So, does it make sense to go do the activity that causes the cravings?? So illogical; but the junkie talk is always illogical. We are better able to handle stress without the nicotine. You are doing great. You know all the tricks that nicotine can play on our minds. Keep the quit!! And remember, smoking is a choice. You have a fabulous quit going. Be proud!

Yes I understand...The why of a thing is always more difficult to grasp than the what.  The what of it is "I am quitting smoking"...That is easy enough...When the hard times come it is not so simple to see the why of it...For me, in those times, it was because I needed to prove to myself that I loved the me that I am enough to make cessation a part of my reality.  That may sound a bit selfish and at a minimum self centered.  However, I have found that the ability to value and care for oneself is actually the well-spring of our ability to love and care for others.  Without the former, there is no possibility of the latter.  And that is very sad indeed.

Glad to see that you got past the situation and I look forward to seeing your progress...Thanks for making the journey with us...

You have done a terrific job making yourself smoke-free, ML. And to have achieved that through tough times emotionally is another marque of the true non-smoker.   I'll remember your post the next time I get myself into a corner and have to struggle with what to feel/say/do... thanks

ML,

You should feel extremely proud of yourself. 204 days of remaining smoke free is a fantastic accomplishment. You are right, smoking will not cure what ails you, but that's what we are here for, to help and support you along the way.
Keep up the great work, and let us know how you are doing.

There have been a couple of things bothering me - well, actually upsetting me - one I haven't any control over and the other I do.  I'm trying very hard to cope with the one I can't control and have taken a giant step to put the other out of my life for once and for all.

I was sitting here tonight feeling extremely down just thinking about this and I was wondering why at my age and the amount of time I had smoked I am quitting on top of emotional upheaval, so I came here to read.  Some things helped, others didn't.  Then I looked at my stats and thought how proud I am of them and what I have gone through to reach this point.  I finally came to the conclusion that smoking isn't going to cure what ails me, only I can do that, so thanks to all of you for sharing your stories and thanks to SSC for leaving posts on the board for motivation.

Smoke-Free Days: 204
Cigarettes Not Smoked: 4,080
