Day 5 and struggling

Hiya David! It is hard at first, there's no doubt about it. It really does get easier though - I promise. Honest! Of course, saying it will get easier doesn't neccessarily help you RIGHT NOW, I know. Others have given great advice and I want to reinforce it. PLAN for having cravings. Have something handy. For myself, I used Starburst. They really helped me a lot. It was something to chew on and the flavor was strong enough to really help even things out. The other big help for me was my mindset. I wasn't trying to quit, I quit. Reading lots and lots of messages here also helped reinforce my mindset. Hearing everyone else struggles and successes really inspired me. I also kept a copy of the 'Junkie Thinking' thread right in front of me all day. It helped remind me what I was going through. It really hit home for me. You can read it here: Junkie Thinking Keep in touch. Read lots, post lots and crave the quit! Hi everyone, my names David and this is my fifth day smoke free and the cravings are hard to cope with. I have been smoking 30 a day for around 31 years. I am using step1 15mg nicotine patches, they seem to be helping a bit. Well I am in this for the long term as my health is not so good now and am on inhalers to help me breathe easier so have got to fight this. Thanks for your messages of encouragement. This morning was hell but it got better as the day went on. This is a great place am glad I found it. Have been keeping busy working all day which has really helped. I think the weekend took it's toll on me as I stayed in, read a few books but didn't do much else. Josie, 'hell week' is an understatement but determination I have. I am suffering from COPD and I have no intention of letting it get any worse. Anyway one day at a time .. and today I will succeed! It's a struggle, David. Certainly it is at times. But there are other times when the struggle receeds and we experience real peace about why we're doing this, and we're so glad we made the decision. We've done this a long time, and it can't be undone overnight. We just have to accept that and take it a day at a time. BUT... it will get better! I've smoked a pack a day or more for 35 years. I've also used unhalers from time to time, though so far I still haven't been diagnosed with anything too dire. I hope that by quitting now I'll be around to see my grandchildren one day... but regardless, I don't want to leave this world enslaved to nicotine. When I go, I want to go as a free man. Phil, 50 years? I wish you'd wright a post in another area and say what your physical recovery has been like. Might give guys like me some hope. David, I'm so glad you've found this site! Congratulations on making it through 5 smokeless days - you're almost done with Hell Week! You mentioned that the cravings are "hard to cope with". Something helpful to remember: You experience more cravings as a smoker than as a non-smoker. When you're a smoker, the craving starts within 20 minutes of finishing a cigarette. So, you experience cravings between each smoke. As a nonsmoker, like yourself (!), you experience intermittant cravings throughout the day - but they get weaker and less frequent as each day goes by. Hi David and a warm welcome... Some sage advice here for you :) Make sure to find some good distractions for the weekends - distractions saved my quit so many times. A new project around the house, calling a friend, go for a walk, get out and find something to get lost in... distractions are magical in the quit process. This place is amazing - stay close and post often!
