Helping spouce quit

Aw, thanks Bear! Yesterday didn't go that great for my husband. He didn't touch any of the distractions I set out for him, and he had a couple of smokes. He said he crushed his last smoke and today is his new quit day. I bought the Allen Carr book on CD, he said he would like to listen to it. I told him I was glad that he was not giving up, but actually I can't help but feel a little resentful that he has not tried harder. Today has been hard for me. I am quite cranky and was short with my family this morning. Thanks you guys! Today is my husbands big day! I will try to be as supportive as I can in a subtle way. There are tooth picks, mints and Hot Tamalies candy on the counter. There are water bottles and cut up veggies in the fridge. I read to him an inspiring post from Danno that I thought he could relate to, and I will suggest an after dinner walk. I checked out Allen Carr's web sight. Very impressive. I will see if Barnes & Noble has the book. Thanks again for all of the suggestions. Jodi The Non-Smoker! Buy him Allen Carrs book, it can sometimes be a magic bullet and it can help him make up his mind. The best encouragement is to do well in your own quit. You are setting an example without even realizing it, and that is huge! Also try dropping a few hints, so he'll think things are his idea (You remmeber the Wilma Flintstone take on how to control a husband...) like having cut up veggies to munch on, or water to sip on. Keep on reading the quotes etc to him, you never know, he may ask how to get on here! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 239 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,975 Amount Saved: $2,521.45 Life Gained: Days: 29 Hrs: 6 Mins: 15 Seconds: 35

I say help him without letting him know you are helping him. You know how stubborn those husbands can be. ;p Ok, I'm kidding but there is a little truth to that. What I mean to say is if you can be helpful without him feeling like you are pressuring him, he will respond better. Not that you are doing that, but it's just a word of caution. Sometimes people perceive our help as something other than what our intentions were when we 'helped' them initially. People are generally more accepting of help they asked for than they are of the unsolicited kind. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/25/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 66 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,980 Amount Saved: $386.10 Life Gained: Days: 5 Hrs: 22 Mins: 54 Seconds: 16

Way to go you two! One thing I have noticed is that everyone's quit is different. My husband was able to quit years ago with no support group and I was still smoking and continued to smoke, but somehow, he was able to quit. So if your husband does his quit slightly different than yours, that's ok, just as long as it works for him and he quits. Jodi Great! How about mint toothpicks? Will he go on an after dinner walk with you? Will he drink water? Ice cold water really does help. And from a bottle is even better ;) I have to check with my brother. Last time I spoke with him he said his quit date is Nov 1, too. Maybe they could be quit buddies, once removed...lol Remember, this is his quit, so let him manage at least some of it. ;p And, whatever you do, don't let it influence the great quit you've got going! Congrats on those 15 days!!!! Jodi, Keep offering suggestions, you may find he becomes more receptive to them once he quits and withdrawals & cravings kick in. :) Danielle, Bilingual Support Specialist

Hi there! My husband has set Nov. 1st as his NEW quit day! He is the one who (thank goodness) got this ball rolling on our quitting. He was having trouble breathing. He had a chest x-ray that came back normal, but his Dr. said that he has the lung capacity of a one hundred year old man. His Dr. gave him Chantix and told him to come back 3 weeks after he quit. That was 7 weeks ago. I decided to quit with him, and am so glad I did. My question is, how can I best encourage and support him? He is very old school. He has never touched a computer and doesn't plan to. I have suggested that he make a list of reasons to quit, and plan some craving distractions, but he doesn't really want to prepare in these ways. He did ask that I buy some tooth pics though. I have been sharing with him some of the daily quotes and some statistics. I'm really worried about my husband and I want him to be successful in his quit.
