Wow guys, You made me feel so special. You all wrote such loving posts. I am not sure what is going on. I have always been the type A personality. Very energetic. I love the outdoors and am upbeat. I think this depression started this summer. Anxiety preceeded it the year before. It seems to wax and wane. Somedays feel sadder than others. My (grown) children notice it. That bothers me. I seem to have to force myself to do things....more out of protocol than a desire to do them. I go to bed really early....but don't sleep well. I don't really want to talk on the phone much or have conversation with others. I feel sad....kind of down on myself...cry easy. I know that since I got this bad fibromyalgia flare up the depression has gotten worse. I am embarresed about it. I don't know why. There was this despression test I took and ...oh my gosh... it sounded like me. Nonic, what you wrote was very much like me. I do think I used smoking as a way to surpress alot of serious hurt I have had in my life. I asume I may also grieve no having my outlet. But for the most part....I have worked hard at having a positive quit. Changing....everything you wrote is me. Even the mental focus is clouded. I see a Rheumie specialist in a couple of weeks. I did research tonight on depression. I took vitimans with supper. Something I should have been doing. I know I seem to feel better after a brisk walk with my dog. Maybe some is that SADS. I mean..really...this weather is enough to get anyone down!! Danielle... I will check out the link now. I guess it may be a little of everything. I have never really experienced the blah..sad stuff like this before. I really do have a good head on my shoulders. Thanks again. I will be alright. Hi Mercy, I can fully apprecaite how you are feeling having been there myself. I struggled with depresseion for sveral months hoping it would pass unfortunately it got to the stage where I knew and my family knew this was a problem which was not going away by itself. I was very hesitant to be prescribed anti depressants and tried st johns wort. In my case it did nothing to ease my symptoms. I gave in and agreed to take anti depressants. In all honesty I am so glad now that I did. After 6 weeks I can now honestly say that I feel the best I have in years and am enjoyiong life so very much. Work has improved, my family life has improved, my relationship with my wife has improved. Life is great ! I realise that everyone is different so I would urge you to talk to your doctor about your options. I can appreciate your reluctance but please accept that if you need help you need help. There is no shame in admitting it. Please let us know how you get on. Mercy, Okay girl, it's time for you to check in here and let us know how you're feeling. ;) We're concerned about you and you know that we want to help. I posted something on the prayer thread for you. Okay? Go there when you have the time. Depression can be part of your quit. I've felt a bit of it too here lately. The worst thing you can do is give into it. Changing's post is very good and right on the money. How long has this depression been going on? Mercy - First, I'm sorry to hear that you're going through a tough time right now and are feeling a bit down in the dumps. Next I'll say - wow your quit meter is impressive - congratulations. And finally, I'll give you my two cents re: depression (keep in my it's just my opinion!): Watch yourself and be mindful of the symptoms you're experiencing - there's a difference from being sad/tired and being clinically depressed. Besides feeling sad, how many other symptoms do you have: decreased energy/motivation, tearfulness, change in appetite/weight, poor concentration/focus, no longer taking pleasure in activities that you used to enjoy, isolation, & hopelessness. If you're having a bunch of these consistently for a few weeks and/or intermittantly over the last 3 months, then it's probably time to see your doctor. Meds (anti-depressants) are one type of treatment option. There are other options - talk therapy, natural alternatives like St. John's Wart and Sam-E, light therapy, etc. I know that the quitting process is hard, uncomfortable, and includes a lot of physical re-adjustments in our bodies, but that doesn't mean that we need to suffer everything without intervention. If you have a clinical depression (not just feeling down occassionally), you deserve to speak with a professional and pursue to treatment to help you feel better. Everybody gets the Blues. Quitting can be depressing both physically and mentally. Quitting can also take away a coping strategy that hid an existing depression. There is no shame in feeling blue and you don't have to run out and take something. Part of what we learn in our quit is that we have a range of emotions and it's ok to experience them. However, if your mood continues for an extended period, or you find yourself unable to do basic things (like get out of bed), or seclude yourself for weeks - then you need to get help to pull out of it (consider a talk to your MD at that point). My advice is to let someone close to you know now that you are in a slump, they can watch if you slip and be there to pull you up if you can't get up by yourself. However, allow yourself a little time to mourn and wallow. Sorry, can't tell you anything about St. John's Wart. Mercy, Everyone's quit is different and many go through depression. Some because it was always there and smoking covered it up and others because of quitting and it passes. Regardless of your situation, discuss this with your doctor. SERIOUSLY! I went through a lot of tough times with my quit. Some due to my attitude, self-pity, past history, frustration, depression, anxiety and a world of other things. After a year and a half, I finally sought help from my doctor and then eventually counseling. I put myself through a lot that I probably didn't need to go through but I have held on to my quit for dear life. If you need some help, don't hesitate to seek it out. I am finally on the right road and moving forward. My quit became the only solid thing in my life. Just don't smoke, the rest will come. Mercy, It may not be that quitting has caused your depression but that smoking masked it. Although a case of the blues is to be expected, your doctor can help you make the distinction between a case of the blues or long-standing depression. We also have a sister site that may be of help to you: www.depressioncenter.net It has a great therapy program as well as depression test that you can take and share with your doctor. If you are diagnosed with depression, you can then talk to your doctor about treatment options. St. Johns Wort has been used for those with mild to moderate depression, however you should be monitored by your doctor while taking any type of anti-depressant. As we know, although herbal products can provide great therapeutic benefits, they are not always safe. They have been shown to interact with other medications your may taking, produce side effects or aggravate certain conditions. Again, we recommend you consult with your physician. Hope this helps. Mercy, I can tell you that depression is very common during quitting smoking. I once googled "Depression when quitting amoking" and a huge list appeared. I was shocked. No one had ever said anything about it, but everyone that I knew (that quit smoking) went thru some sort of it, including myself. It makes sense that Nicotine affects the brain and of course now, we are denying the brain of that level of Nicotine, so of course the chemistry has changed. We do also go through a grieving process when we quit smoking, so it may be tied to that. Everyone is different, so depends on the person If you are worried about it, see your Doctor.
