Frances, Glad to see you made it through. Some quitters do find that alcohol & caffeine both trigger craves. Some choose to avoid it for the first weeks, others don't. Only you can judge which is best for you. Danielle _____________________ The SSC Support Team

Hey S. Same here in Ontario. No smoking in bars, restaurants, bowling alleys and the list go,es on and on.In fact we,re back to the 30,s as to where you can smoke. But it,s a great help when your trying to quit. Hi Frances, I am so glad you made it through that crave. Sounds like it could be one of the threes for you. You know - little rough spots at 3 days, 3 weeks, 3 months. Onwards though - you handled it brilliantly. Isn't it strange though, how what works for one doesn't for another and vice versa? I HAD to keep drinking (that sounds bad but you know what I mean!) I think there can be a sense of deprivation around quitting. And since I associated having a wee dram with pleasure and relaxation, I could not face doing without smokes AND without a drink. So I would sometimes sit and have a glass or two even in the very early days. Sometimes I had to "smoke" fresh air through a straw for it to feel REALLY good, but I don't need the straw now. Well done on getting through. Bear, I used NRT too and I still got cravings. As I understand it, the body doesn't absorb nicotine from NRT the way it does from a smoke. You don't get that instant brain rush nor the intensity of nicotine. Plus, you have all of those associations to break as well. Maybe its easier here in Scotland as you can't smoke in any bars any more?! Hi all I did survive that craving...I think cravings are more complicated than what is scientifically known about them. I know that I am 'addicted' to the feeling of smoke in my lungs, no matter what the source and whether or not I am using nrt. Just a note about drinking...I'm kind of a pro at quitting now (kind of sad but I'm determined this will be THE ONE) but in my earlier quits I absolutely had to not drink alcohol for the first few weeks and then I had to switch from beer to something else for months...same with coffee - I had to switch to tea for awhile. Those associations can be so difficult (but not impossible) to break. Good Morning Everbody Tutti I can understand why you and everybody that quit cold turkey would have cravings. To the best of my knowledge Nicotine is the only addictive chemical in tobacco. The rest is all garbage. So if your on NRT,s although you may not be getting the same dose of nicotine as you would in a cigarette your getting enough to satisfy your craving. So this is were I wonder if there,s something else going on with xsmokers other than cravings ???? Tutti even peanuts won,t help me when I go to a bar because wnen I go to a bar it,s for all the wrong reasons believe me!!! :eg:

Hey Bear, I don't know that much at all about NRTs. I had to quit Cold Turkey because I'm diabetic. But I don't think you're getting the same amount of nicotine in an NRT that you got in a cigarette. And, cigarettes have so many other chemicals in them that make us addicted. Man, this is an interesting topic. I'd like for this one to keep going. Watch out for those 30, 60, and 90 Day marks. Be prepared just in case you do hit a bump in the road. Shoot, I've been reading posts and trying to find where we DON'T hit a bump. ha ha ha We'll get there though. If you don't want to avoid the watering hole right now, then sit at a different table, maybe order something other than Jack ;), and even sit your glass on the opposite side than you normally would. You know, change it up so that it's less of a trigger for you. Oh, and get some of those roasted/salted peanuts in the shell to take into that watering hole so you can stay busy. (Uh, Just make sure you don't grin at anybody with peanuts between your teeth.) HEEE!! I think your new job will help you too, Bear. I really do think you've been sort of down. Getting out and about with people will help you and then, you have us too. Your right Tutti I had been drinking and walked over to the local watering hole. After a while the alcohol decided I needed a smoke so I purchased a small cigar.I did,nt even finish it.I had a couple of drags on it put it out and stuck it in my pocket . When I got up the next morning I found it in my pocket and threw it out. My curiousity arose because I have read about other peoples cravings and did,nt understand how you could have cravings if the only thing in tobacco thats addictive is nicotine .If your using an NRT how do these cravings arise ??? Bear, You weren't craving at all when you lit up? You were drinking and then lit up without craving? Do I have that right? If that's the case, I'd say it's habitual. That psychological addiction is tough. You may have drank a bit first and then lit up, you may not have realized that you were lighting up until it was too late. What do you think? I sort of think you were down in the dumps and bored stiff and that led to a little slip. You're at that 30 day mark where a lot of us hit that bump in the road. You may not have been prepared for it at all. Make sure you always keep your coping skills handy at all times. Old Nic can be sneaky. Learn the lesson I learned from my slip....Drink a bunch of water and come here BEFORE lighting up. Now, that's good medicine there.
