I think that is one of the most frightening things about lung cancer, there are no pain receptors in the lungs, so by the time you are aware there is anything wrong it is too late. Also is if as smokers we last to old age what would life be like for us? Our lungs could find it hard to fill with oxygen so we end up with no energy to enjoy our retirement. We might have to lose a toe/foot/leg, because we've restricted the blood flow to the extremities for so long. That actually made my mum stop smoking because her father ended up with gangrene in one of his feet, because the blood supply had shut off, and my mum noticed her little toe was starting to go black. Heart attack risk. If you survive one you wonder when the next will come, like my father. I'd rather go through quitting now than wait until I have to. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 11/7/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 20 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 513 Amount Saved: 110 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 14 Mins: 0 Seconds: 36

Dunedad, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss, and I agree with you 100%, he was dieing for over 25 years....I don't want that to be us. That is one of the big reasons we are quitting...quality of life. Life with our families, our kids and our friends. I miss smoking, but I'm slowly finding that I don't miss as much anymore, I'm finding other ways to fill those gaps. It just takes time, and we have to be strong! Stay in touch and Congrats on completing three weeks!!!! My Mom just called to let me know her next door neighbor and a man I have known my whole life, died today. From...you guessed it, lung cancer. He quit smoking 3 weeks ago, about the time he found out he had it. He was a rarety indeed, he was 81 years old. Smoked for well over 60 years. Some would say he lived a normal life expectancy, who knows how long he would have lived? He has had emphysema for years. Some might use him as an example; "see, he lived a full life as a smoker", much like I said of George Burns....I look at it like this now; He started to die 25 years ago. I am glad I quit smoking! This might be an idea for a new category: "Who do you know..." I think everybody probably knows of someone who has been taken from the effects of smoking, I have seen many a post lately...Then again maybe we want to focus on the positives of our quit's, the fact that we are not going to face years of degradation, is positive enough for me. I'm sorry to hear the sad news. As Lady rightly said, "Smoking Kills. It doesn't care who", there is no reason why we should return to cigarettes. For quitters, smoking is not an option. Period. As you say 81 is a good innings especially for a smoker in fact he was one of the lucky ones......
