The OTHER Junkie

Thanks for the post - You know I think that I always wanted to hear that there was a magic cure. I have been ashamed of my smoking for many years now. But I did listen when people like you spoke and I kept each piece advice ready for the time when I was prepared for my quit. Mind you, I never appreciated any unsolicited advice. Those critical people just made me dig my heals in harder. Aren't you glad that you don't have to deal with that Nicodemon anymore! I have two smoking friends, this summer in the beginning of my quit, they said they were stopping before September, I congratulated them on their decision and left it at that, now end of September still smoking, I put in a phrase now and then, I think it's starting to sink in. One day at a time :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 6/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 103 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,559 Amount Saved: $412 Life Gained: Days: 13 Hrs: 16 Mins: 58 Seconds: 9

I know what you are saying Coben. I wish I could go out and kill other people's Nicodemons. Unfortunately, we are only allowed to kill our own Nicodemon. We can point out other people's Nicodemon if they will listen to us. Sometimes we might even be able to clear just enough smoke for them to get a glimpse of the sucker. And maybe just maybe that will help them to get going on their own hunt. btw, you helped me on my hunt. As a group of people who have quit smoking (or are about to) please make a note of this. You already have or may experience random people contacting you by telephone (we have a directory at work) or coming up to your office. They want to know how you quit smoking, they question you about many different things, they tell you it's so great and how they too want to quit. I felt great that three people asked me to support them and help out and when they were "ready" they would stop by and talk about their quit. Well, this is the OTHER junkie, the one that belongs to someone else (we all have our own personal junkie!)the one that is THEM talking to you. After they tell you how they want to quit and will come by for help you -- They give you every "reason" why they should not quit "RIGHT NOW". "It's just not the right time". "I really don't smoke that much". "My partner smokes and it would really not work at all". "I am a healthy person". On and on they go. Sometimes they even use work as an excuse, "we have departmental job cuts happening right now", "I am SO overworked", etc. I just say, when you're ready we can talk then. I'll be here. You and I both know where that's going. These people are only kidding themselves - I see them outside smoking away and looking ashamed when they see me. How do I know?? Because I once felt the same way. Wanting to quit, but not sure how and when to get it going. I don't judge them, I just feel bad for them for not having the courage to at least TRY for one hour at a time not to smoke. I have offered my help in a sincere way, they have to want to do it for themselves. I used to think it's not the right time. Then I realized ANY day would be a good day to quit smoking. There never was going to be a "right time". I am healthy too - don't I want to keep it that way? I have had five bosses and just as many job changes - even had my job eliminated in the past - smoking did not help that. We all have had the junkie whispering to us - he is still making appearances and making addicts miserable everywhere! It's just strange to get a glimpse of the junkie talking directly to you through someone else. Hi CobenFan Great thread and insight ya got going here!! I have had the same things happen with me with friends, family and colleagues. I never thought about it but you are right about Junkie Talking! For years I never gave quitting a thought. (too scared and never thought I could) Then the last couple of years before my quit I did start thinking about it, But all the XSmoker's I talked to were not happy smokers like you and I. They seemed to suffer withdraw forever......So that scared me off. We need to tell the world everyday how lucky and happy and FREE we are and these Wanna Be's will come on our side eventually. Don't give up on them.....you have planted the seed. They definitly want what you got!!! I am proud of you Coben and you are the First person on this site and in my life who made me realize quitting is HAPPY! THANK YOU thank you THANK YOU thank you!!!
