Fear

Thanks Phillip, and I went to the thread on courage. Good stuff, although I really don't know what "bumping" means. Good bunch of people here!

For the first time in my life, I am embracing fear. I am so scared of lighting up a cigarette. It would mean that after 25 days, I would be lost again. 25 days of hell for nothing and I don't think I could quit again, if I "slipped". This quit does seem to get better, but it is so damned hard. Saturday, I drop down to the 14mg patch. I'm concerned, but failure doesn't seem to be as much of a concern anymore because I'm too damned scared. Like I was too scared to ever try heroin. It's a rational fear, anyway. Now, the idea of smoking is really horrifying. Maybe I sound nutty, but I'm really grateful for the fear. The reason I'm posting this is that maybe this will help you folks in the first week or so when it doesn't seem so horrible to cave in and buy a pack. Eventually, there is relief in that the idea of "slipping" becomes almost unthinkable. By the way, this site has helped a lot. Kudos to "Lady" and the thread that launched a thousand replies! Be afraid....be very afraid. Thanks, everyone, Bob My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/18/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 25 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,027 Amount Saved: $225 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 5 Mins: 12 Seconds: 14

Thanks for the advice Katy, and also, btw, your opinion on this "slipping" that has taken over so much of recent posts. I begin to understand why the "other site" is so hard core about this. But really, I don't look at this as a sentence. Actually, it's a good feeling to be past the point where considering giving up is scarey. I'm playing games with my brain, I guess, but it works for me to be fearful of even thinking of smoking. And it should. This is hell and I never want to experience it again. So the days go by...almost at 30. I am really proud of myself. I'm really looking forward to the year milestone. It is amazing how we have to find a way to trick our brains. For me this works. It petrifies me to think of having to do this again, IF I could. Now that I am Sir Bob of the Knights of the Empty Ashtray, I honestly couldn't face the dishonor of it all! It is courageous for all of us doing this, don't get me wrong. But this "fear" has been an ironic blessing for me. Rob, I hear what you are saying. You are not afraid of slipping, you are using fear to keep you from slipping. Right? You can tell that your mind is in the right place to be successful in this. Although it is not easy, it is alot easier if your mind in in the right place. I don't know why it takes us so long to get our minds where they need to be, but it sure took me a long time. Better late then never though. I can't believe how fast the time has gone by. Before you know it you will be at 60 days! Hi Rob47, I totally understand your fear of losing your quit. I had posted before about how I've been babying my quit. Making sure I didn't do anything or go around anybody who may trigger the cravings. I also have a strong fear of failure, so I'm hoping that will take me far when I am feeling weak. Fear is a normal response as well to things we don't understand. No one knows what the future has in store for us, but I hope to face it all as a non-smoker. By the by, Congratulations on 25 days! I totally get what you are saying. I am nearing a year. Even now, I sometimes have an irrational thought like....oh I am on vacation, I could just have one. One of the main things that stops me (besides an increased recognition of my own pathological junkie thinking) is the thought, the fear, the HORROR of EVER going through the misery of withdrawal again.
