Coughing

18 years ago 0 2 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Thank you!! I am still coughing a bit, but I've found that you're all right - I DO like it. It means that I'm healing, and it's added incentive not to smoke...who wants to smoke when I'm hacking like this? The worst withdrawal symptom I'm dealing with is feeling spacey and dizzy, which I understand should be over pretty soon, so that's all good. :D

This is weird (or maybe not?). I quit today (yay) - and I've been hacking up a lung since this morning. It started ever since I got in the car around 8am, and I haven't stopped since. I've read all of the stuff about how the coughing gets worse before it gets better, but I thought that was days down the line...not HOURS. I suppose, when I think about it, I'm normally 5-6 cigarettes in by this point, but still - the fact that I'm seriously hacking up stuff right now is just strange. It's definately motivation to keep going, which is useful, since I'm seriously antsy - not craving so badly as much as just antsy and having issues with sitting still - but I have an itch in my throat that's insane and I'm interrupting meetings at work with my smokers cough. :) I didn't quite realize this was going to happen. :D

Hi there, newborn katchoo! Don't worry, I am coughing up some brown-grey mucus and I am sooo happy I am, because it means that all that dirt and poison is cleared out of my lungs :) - if you suspect that you may be ill though, go to a doc. Anyway, it's good to go to a doc and have your lungs x-rayed - you can repeat the x-ray 3 months later and notice that your lungs are cleaner (that's a good incentive!). Good luck to you and see you around! CONGRATULATIONS KATCHOO on your decision to quit smoking. You are another day into your quit by now and if you are like I was, you are still coughing. The cough is troublesome but is to be expected ----and welcomed, because it is a sign of healing. There will be a lot of different kinds of healing coming your way and some of it will be annoying but revel in it knowing you are becoming healthier. This quitting business is a strange new path for all of us and is not an easy road to travel but it is well worth it. Stick with SSC and remember NOPE, not one puff ever. Katchoo, Welcome again! As you quit smoking you can experience an uncomfortable cough. You can start to cough up black/brown mucous. What is happening is that your bodys Cilia (which are tiny hair-like particles that line your lungs) are in a healing process. They are first paralyzed and your body does not want to produce any mucus, therefore a dry cough sets in. As the cilia begin to heal themselves they start to clean all areas of your lungs. This is where you start to cough up all that awful mucus. These symptoms can last day or weeks after you quit smoking. The healing is a long process of change, even though some of the benefits come more quickly than others. Try drinking more water, herbal tea and even cough drops or candy. If you have a symptom that persists or seems worse than you expected, you should immediately consult a doctor. Its possible that your smoking has been masking symptoms of some illness, and when you stop smoking the symptoms abruptly become noticeable. Hope this helps, Josie ______________________ The SSC Support Team.
