Cigarettes Not Smoked

Hi Stickin, we have some company from out of town this weekend. Neither of them smokes, but last night we were sitting around the dining room table after dinner, just talking, and I had this impulse to reach over and pick up...a non-existent cigarette pack! It certainly wasn't a crave, just one of those funny impulses. I had to laugh. I was using Grandma as as example :gasp: And she most certainly should take the time to think about what caused the trigger. Thanks for the clarification Ros.
When Grandma completed something she rewarded herself with a smoke. The completion of a task is one of her triggers.
Exactly, and it is usually helpful to identify what caused a trigger, so that it is easy to knock it down quickly the next time it happens. That is what grandma is doing and I wanted to reassure her that by doing this she wasn't "dwelling" (as long as she didn't spend too long thinking about it, not every trigger is easy to explain) I quite agree that dwelling or worrying about craves and triggers is very counter-productive. Cigarettes Not Smoked

When Grandma completed something she rewarded herself with a smoke. The completion of a task is one of her triggers. She has options to tame that trigger. One - never complete anything or two, - she turns her attention away from the thought using mental and or mental and physical distractions until the smoking thought leaves. Practice it! It can be a challenging, fun game. Like, Ill bet I can hammer this trigger this time. Turn your attention away from the smoking thoughts using distraction techniques. We talked about a lot of them here: walking, water, straws, hiding under the covers, soothing baths, shower, weight lifting, aerobics, yoga, reading, writing whatever suits your fancy just dont smoke. Tame those triggers by replacing the thought (distractions)!!! It has worked for me and I smoked for 40+ and guess what? I am glad that I dont smoke anymore. Thank God, when free stay free! You are right Stickin, if you allow yourself to dwell on the craves they will only make them worse. But - to Grandma - there is nothing wrong with spending a short while trying to identify what has caused either a smoking thought or a full blown crave, that way hopefully you can find a way of defusing the trigger. However, if the answer isn't immediately obvious, then it's usually better to let it go and move on, rather than let it worry you. Cigarettes Not Smoked

Thanks for the topic. I really don't look at the thoughts as craves much anymore. I look at them as be reactive to something I use to do. I am focused on changing behavior. Like Grandma said she thought about a cig after she finished something. For me that is old behavior that need to be changed. Does any of this make sense? A crave for me is when my mind and body are all tangled up and the feeling are driving me up the wall. I am having this battle going on inside and it is driving me crazy. :eg: A thought doesn't put me in orbit, but a crave does. When you have smoked for many years, it's part of your life, your memories, so no matter how long you've been quit the thought will pop up once in a while, it's only natural, don't dwell on it as Stickin says, it will pass in seconds. I have been quit for over a year now and saturday, our good friends came over for dinner, they're smokers, I have smoked with them for 30 years, so as soon as they step in the door the idea pops up in my mind, I just discard it, I don't smoke anymore. If you want it, you will do it, One day at a time Marie My Milage: My Quit Date: 6/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 463 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 7,871 Amount Saved: $3,009.50 Life Gained: Days: 61 Hrs: 12 Mins: 39 Seconds: 33
