my 14 year old son has MDD

Comic Sans MS Doreen, my son attempted suicide when he was 14, he is now 16. We went through many doctors and many counselors until we found a psychiatrist and counselor that he likes. That is a good part of their recovery--they have to have a doctor they will open up to. If Aaron still didn't like them after several visits we just found another one. He has been through many different medications but about a year ago they hit on the right ones and he's doing fairly well. His doctor and counselors are friends to him. I'm really happy with them. We also have him attending a teen group therapy weekly. He has up and down times but he is so much different than he was a year ago. He has quit school and is now homeschooling. He is a good kid and very bright so hopefully this will be a right step. There have been scary times but psychotherapy and psych drugs are a trial and error thing and I have found out that major depression doesn't get fixed over night. It has been a long battle and I know it's not over yet. Read up on MDD so you understand what they are going through and no matter what they say, no matter how frustrating it can be just love them. Keep Smiling! :)

My 14 yr old son was just diagnosed with MDD. He has been having problems over the years that have been getting progressively worse including suspensions from school. He was in a hospital for 6 days because he had suicidal thoughts which is where he was diagnosed. He went to a follow-up day program where he continued to be seen the the same psychiatrist that saw him in the hospital. This dr put him on lexapro and resperdal which we noticed made matters worse, he was getting more agressive and talking about suicide more so we took him off the meds after talking with a pharmacist and his pediatrician. After looking up the drug we found out that it has side effects that cause this and we blame the dr for not recognizing the symptoms. We pulled him from his care (not only for this but for other reasons also)but are searching for help because we realize that our son does need it. Now they want him to go on Welbutrin, I am scared of the side effects and of what can happen, he has had a history of not responding well to certain drugs. I am also scared that if he doesn't get help things will get worse. I need some advise. Doreen
