Hi everyone:  Right now I am sewing a baby quilt for my daughter who is having a girl in February.  I wanted to share a cute remark her little 2.5 yr. old said one night.  Her husband was talking to the baby as it was kicking away and the 2 yr. old heard him.  So he went over to see what the commotion was about and after listening for awhile he said to his father, "Daddy, help her, open it so she can get out".   Just an everyday happy family.

Thanks Davit,

I know, right.  It seems like ages ago that I couldn't get in the shower without fear of panic and I couldn't even drive down the street for fear of an attack at a stopped traffic light.  Who knows what I will be able to do a year from now.  Maybe I'll be able to get on a plane and even travel outside of the country.  Anything's possible.

Here for you too,
Shari

I hug my pets, knit, make lanyard braided keychains, have coffee at the book store with friends.  Make jewelry, paint, draw, take a walk, ride my bike.  Talk to friends and family on the phone.  Email friends and family.  Read a good novel, write, journal, crochet, visit the pet store and craft store.  Go to the next town up or a town an hour away for a change of scenery and go to the book stores and other stores there.  Get a blueberry bagel and coffee and sit outside.  Swing on my porch swing.  Go on vacation to Florida - tons of things to do there.  Disney, Universal Studios, Gatorland, air boat rides,  Serpentarium, etc.  Walk at the zoo, go to Washington D.C. to the museums or Baltimore to the Inner Harbor, the Aquarium, to the beach,  or to my home town to the knitting shop and go to my favorite place to eat.  Volunteer, take a class, learn something new and try new things.  That's a start :)

According to some experts, depression is caused by a lack of pleasant activities. What are pleasant activities? Pleasant activities are simply things you like to do.

The basic idea is that when people are not depressed, their lives are made up of a wide variety of activities, some pleasant and positive, some unpleasant and negative, and some neutral. According to the theory, in order to feel better you need to have at least some positive activities in your life. Also, people stay depressed because they have at least the usual share of unpleasant activities but not enough pleasant activities. One of the solutions to overcoming depression is to try to schedule more positive and pleasant events in your life; this will help to get the balance between pleasant and unpleasant activities closer to what it is for people who aren’t depressed.

One of your most important jobs in this program is to take the risk of actually testing some of your predictions about what will happen if you try to do something pleasant. Because any experiment can go wrong, we’ll want you to repeat some experiments to see what happens each time. You don’t have to believe that you’ll enjoy the activity; you just have to be willing to try and see what happens. Think of yourself as a scientist who is performing experiments on your moods.

If you’re having some trouble coming up with some activities, here’s a list of some simple activities to get you started:

Going for a walk

Getting dressed up

Meeting someone new

Going to a concert

Having coffee with a friend

Going shopping for myself

Going to the beach

Playing golf

Climbing

Reading sacred books

Going to see a sports event

What do you like to do?
