Persistent Negative Thoughts

Hi,

To throw out another couple of ideas.  I'm a Mom also, and although my daughter is grown and on her own now, I know, from experience that it's a huge adjustment having a baby.  Be patient with yourself, because it takes awhile to adjust to Motherhood.  Another thought is Postpartum depression which is also normal, but can be treated by a physician.  I would continue to practice challenging negative thoughts.  You've said they aren't as troubling as before, so it means it's working.  It's a matter of persistence and eventually the negative thoughts will become quiet and be replaced by the positive one's you've used to counteract them.  Writing them down helps, until it becomes easier, and you can do them in your head.  Welcome, by the way :)

I've mentioned this before. You can't fix something unless you know why it is broke. In this case the exercises work better if you know why it is happening. We spend a lot of time replaying memory. This is a survival thing we all do. Usually subconscious. So think about this. What are you going to replay if all you have in memory is fears and negative thoughts related to these fears? The mind is always upgrading memory. This is how we learn. All the joyous memories are still there, they are just buried under negative thoughts.
You can bury the negative thoughts by finding and thinking of a few positive thoughts every time you get one of these negative thoughts. This will bury them and leave you with mostly positives to replay. I say mostly because some negatives will still try to get through. 

Try doing relaxation exercises at the same time to make it easier to think positive thoughts.

One important thing. Don't try to block negative thoughts, this only makes them more prominent. Accept them and challenge them with a few positives. This will take away their power.

Ps. Be prepared for a few setbacks when you are tired or having a particularly stressful day. This is normal and does not mean failure. They will become fewer.

As hugs4u mentioned try completing some of the other sections of the program that will compliment what you have done in the challenging your negative thoughts portion. 

If you woke up tomorrow and the problem was solved, what would be the first thing you would notice was different?

There's a program with steps in separate sections,which you can complete with assistance from the online educators and members.  A diary, at the toolbar, allows you to enter the information, so you can see it in a graph, and even take it to a helping professional.  The program is at the top of the toolbar, under the word "toolbox".
 
I used the diary today.  yesterday my dentist reminded me of my appointment, which I always need help relaxing for, since the cleaning visit is painful.  To deal with the discomfort, I get a massage, but the therapist is in an unfamiliar area.  I wrote my worries about getting lost, parking problems and other issues in the the diary, and have a record of how I was feeling so I can improve and monitor my behaviour.  Some day I'll probably drive to the massage place, so I know how to park comfortably, and not have to worry so much about the future dental appointment, since there's enough concern about the appointment.  I've already been worrying about the appointment overnight, so the sooner I work out details, the better I'll sleep, and be able to continue living in other areas of my life.

Hi, 

I was wondering if anyone has any advice on challenging persistent negative thoughts. I have done the thought exercises a few (3-4) times and I am still experience some of the same persistent thoughts- the thoughts are not as troubling as they were before, and they all seem to centre around the same basic issue (My ability to cope: ie: with having a baby). 

I was wondering is there another technique I should try or should I just keep repeating the negative thought challenging exercise?
