Perimenopause and Panic Disorder

Dear Dawn, I don't have any answers, but can totally relate to your issue. I am 43 and have been experiencing panic since 30. Since the birth of my daughter actually. I am on 20mg paxil, not working as well this time. I got off it about 6 months ago because I wanted to try and cope without drugs-not. Now I am going back to the doctor to see if I can take something else. My OBGYN says maybe a beta-blocker (because I have MVP) might assist the paxil. I don't know, I just wish I could be a little bit more on the normal side of things these days. I'm trying this program to see if any of the techniques will work. I just started session II. So still have along way to go. Good luck with your quest. If something else does come your way, let me know. Thanks

I should mention that I did have my thyroid and my estrogen levels checked by my regular Dr.. I also have had a number of blood test taken at the hospital this summer due to panic episodes. So I requested a referral to the specialist. I found that they want to have a referral and copies of any tests you have had taken in the last year or so. Probalbly to compare results. I have found that my GYN is not all that interested in exploring any further than your basic tests. Your hormones are effected by a lot of factors and a specialist will be sure to spend more time exploring your tests and making sure that they are closely monitored. I will keep you posted.

Hi, Sorry for the delayed response. My computer had a litte run in with some lightning. I am going in to see an endrocrinologist tomarrow to have some tests done to explore the possibility of perimenopausal panic attacks. I have read that you can have panic attack symtoms as symptoms of other types of disorders. Since panic attacks involve the use of such glands as your adrenal glands for instance, I have read that it is important to be sure that the endrocrine system is not somehow involved. I have been successfully treated in the past with biofeedback with paxil and xanax. Somehow I know that this is a little different in the way it is exhibiting. Because of my age and the likelyhood that I am well into perimenopause, it makes sense to make a little further investigation before assigning it to just another episode of panic.

Hi, Dawn: I'm new to this forum (just today!), so I'm a little unclear on the topic title (Perimenopause and Panic Disorder). Did you post the title or is that one of the standard categories? I ask because, at 42, it hadn't occured to me that there is a link between perimenopause and panic; maybe it's something I should look into. Like you, I have had seven years panic-free. Coincidence? ;-) Anyway, do you think you'll have a hormone check? That's certainly an angle I want to explore now. I'd appreciate it if anyone knows more about this topic.

I knew somebody who started experiencing really bad panic attacks after 12 or so years of remission. She was housebound for a year because she was too afraid to go anywhere, and nothing the docs suggested for her seemed to help... but then she went to a new doctor, and they did a bunch of hormone tests on her and found that her hormones were thoroughly screwed up due to perimenopause. I'm not sure what they did for her, but they were able to help her a LOT. She even started driving again, and going places by herself :) Get your hormones thoroughly checked out... they have a massive effect on our moods.

I have had panic attacks since I was 28 years old which is starting to be a long time seems how I am 45. I have had periods of remission, the last one for about seven years. I began having panic attacks again in April of this year. They do not seem to be responding to paxil which has worked in the past. I have made an appointment with an endricrinologist. I have been checked out pretty dang good seems how I have been to the hospital three times. The last time in a ambulance because of tachacardia caused by a cluster of panic attacks. Does anybody have any information on this or suggestions as to where I may find additional information?
