Frightened-Now the test that could ease my mind is causing Anxiety

Crabbyroad,   Although you may think that what you have done is not anything special, it certainly is!   Coping strategies are so unique and vary from person to person. By finding a strategy that works well for you and your needs, it becomes easier when handling other anxious events!

Thanks Sarah,

What got me through-
1) My husband taking me and staying with me that one day
2) As far as "having" to go today, and the worry of the test, I turned it over to the Lord, I figured if I have a heart attack, or heart disease, there is nothing I can do to control that now, and just prayed if that was His plan, please make it quick and painless, if it wasn't, please keep me calm. Which believe me, was very much a surprise to me how calm I was, it wasn't me doing anything special, other than handing it over.

Crabbyroad,   Thank you for the update! And thank you for sharing information on the test with other members!
It is so good to hear you got through the test without any panic or apprehension. What were some of the things that helped you get through it? As you reflect on what worked well for you during a potentially anxiety-provoking event, you will be able to think about how to use these techniques in future situations!

Thanks Jhori and Diva,

I had it today at 8:30am, oddly I was stressed for days thinking about it, even had chest pains and went to ER on Thursday, they did the ekg, showed nothing, bp was high and heart rate 122 (but I wasn't in a panic-anxiety yes, but not panicked- I even chuckled with the nurse said oh my goodness your heart rate is 100 on registering, I said pffffffft, that's really nothing, and I don't even feel it. They did the protein test to see if in midst or prior MI or heart damage, was ok. I seemed to relax later, as they suggested if I was nervous to be admitted overnight for observation, however my husband said I will stay home with you tomorrow (on Friday) and seemed to get better. Think the thought of it was making it worse.

I laid it in the hands of the Lord, said, well If I'm going to go, please make it painless and quick. I prayed. Oddly, I was so relaxed making a 30 mile trip to have it done. Especially, when I was cut off from even my decaf coffee, etc for 24 hours before procedure. Get this- my bp at home is generally 130/82, and panic attacks are 150's/105 and rapid heart rate. Today at the cardiologist was 90/70? The nurses were all just saying, oh how many people would love that reading. I'm saying....um....it's not that way at all. I did very well, no panic or apprehension during the test, Thank the Lord! Bummer side, it will be 24-48 hours on results. Keep me in your prayers please, hoping for all good news.

Anyway, if anybody needs a thallium stress test, here is a run down.

You register, info, etc.
You strip off the top clothing and have the gowns front and back (will put in EKG -12 line leads)
Insert an IV- and inject the thallium
Then you get to lay on a table, flat on your back (ugh hate that), and raise your hands straight over your head, as if you were ready to take a drive off a board. A machine for the next 15 minutes takes about 64 pictures to see the blood flow thru your heart at rest.

Next you come back to the stress/ treadmill room, they take your bp, check the lead lines on the ekg, and give your target rate based on age, gender, etc. Mine was 147. So off I start with a slight brisk walk, as they continously monitor me, and gradually increase the incline and speed to get the target rate, which I hit about 6 1/2 minutes into the test, they immediately inject the dye at your target rate again, I elected to go the full 8 minutes for my age and gender, to cover my bases, but only raised to 155, not far over the target for another quicker run on the treadmill for another minute and half. Actually not a run, or a jog, just quick uphill climb on the treadmill. Then they sit you down, get your BP again, and back to the room for the laying on the table and again 15 min/ 64 pictures of your heart while under stress. Then I was let go. So, I'm anxiously awaiting to hear the results. Will keep you updated.

Hey CrabbyRoad,

I get where you are coming from. I haven't had that test done though so I have no idea how it goes. I agree with Jhori, his advice is pretty much what I end up doing! Hang in there, you can do this!

CrabbyRoad,

Jhori82 has given you some excellent advice. Challenging your negative thoughts will be a great way to prepare.
You can do this!
Members, do you have any suggestions for CrabbyRoad?

Never had that sort of stress test, though I have become very anxiety prone for other tests.  The best coping mechanism for me is preparation then distraction.  You know whats coming up, write down your fears and challenge them.  After this let go and distract yourself with whatever works, TV, walking the dog, etc.  It doesn't erase the fear, but it keeps it at a more even, workable tone.  Hope this helps!

Cheers!

One, that I went to my doctor today for usual medication check up (ok), but bouts of shoulder blade/upper rib cage, heart pain last 2 weeks(doc said could be strained or pulled muscle-but at least he taking me serious enough to check further-Im 46)  . Initailly thought bronchitis or pleurisy, but had pleurisy before, and never got the pain with breathing, nor have I run a fever, or had hacking cough. I had wanted to get cardio workup since I haven't had one for about 16 yrs, shortly after PD struck, and wanted my heart checked out then. But now my doctor has set up an appointment (out of my safe zone), so that is stressing me, as I'm very agoraphobic. Both my dad and step dad have been in the hospital for near 3 months with one, and the other off and on, and never been able to travel to see them. Now I have to trek to thecity-my husband will be accompanying me.(Which helps-but he isn't a fail safe for me)

Never had a stress test, doctors want to do one with the dye injected, so I'm half frightened of my panic symptoms getting excaberated by doing the treadmill, ie, the shortness of breath, rapid heartrate and my thoughts, affecting  the stress test to go haywire, and not keen on being injected with dye, although I know realistically, this is the best they can do to rule out or find something. So I either get a huge sigh of relief once it's all over and done with hopefully a all clear sign. Or they do find something, and I will just have to cross that bridge when I get there. Praying it's not the latter.

So I'm stressing already about the drive up there, and the procedure itself. Anyone else have a stress test and in midst of half panic attack while having it? What do they do to help? Or keep going with the test to see the strain through panic or what? I was doing good walking the dog around the block where I live on my exposure therapy, but still get winded, more pronounced heartbeat (that goes away after the walk) I feel accomplishment, and hasn't deterred my expose therapy on that,  but afraid this would be way more than a casual walk.
