Taking Charge of My Life

Hi Sunny!

Good for you for honoring yourself with self care and choosing not to go to the dance.  Sometimes we need to do that :)

I just got over grieving over my daughter being on her own and my parents being older and living far away.  I used my journal as a tool to get my feelings out and read positive books and feel better.  It cycles, though, especially around the holidays.

I have many happy Disney World memories, as a child and as an adult.  We used to go there a lot.  It is a terrain shock, watching people buy Christmas trees in Bermuda shorts and Hawaiian shirts :)  Those are really happy and good memories to draw on if I get down.  The photo albums are fun to look at, but sometimes I get sentimental as well.

Good to hear from you Sunny!  Have a great day and thanks for your well wishes :)

Hi all:  Didn't go to the circle dance.  Just didn't want to go.  It seemed harder (more stressful) to go and make small talk when I didn't feel like it than going itself, so I stayed home.  I think a bit of "self-care" is in order this week.  I think I am grieving and that needs to get out.  I will journal this week and see what happens.
On a happier note, my oldest daughter is going to spend the holidays in Florida and visit Disney World with her young son.  That makes me happy.  I remember when I brought my two children to Disney World for the holidays and what fun we had.  Coming from a land of snow in winter, to see Christmas trees decked out with seashells etc. was really fun for us to see.

p.s. Shari, hope your back gets better real soon....

Just a quick note on my back issue.  I realized my shoes are too old and worn and may be the culprit.  I bought some cozy indoor boots that are suede on the outside and fuzzy on the inside.  They don't go up too high and with my slacks over them, they look like shoes.  They are as comfortable as slippers and they fit.  I have a hard time fitting shoes, because they are usually too narrow, so these boots will work until I can find a place that has loafers or some other comfortable type shoe.  When I get new shoes, it usually takes 3 days for my back to adjust to them, so I'm hoping this works and solves the back issue.

In addition to reading positive and uplifting books, I addressed all of my current negative thoughts.  I wrote them down on a paper in handwriting and had 3 columns.  What is Stressing Me, Negative Self Talk and Positive Self Talk.  Then I typed on Microsoft Word, "Current Positive Self Talk" and I printed it out.  So, I'm going to start my day reading it out loud and I will pull out the paper and read it, whenever the negative thoughts try to come back.  When these negative thoughts are conquered, I'll address the new ones.  Just so you know, I practice what I preach :)  It's good for me to write down what's bothering me, because sometimes I feel like I know something's bothering me, but I don't realize what it is and then I sometimes end up finding more than one thing.  So, when I get it out on paper, it's a release, because it's not inside, bothering me anymore.  I also learned from another book, that my back pain is due to stress, rather than injury.  Dr. Sarno said it's your brain trying to distract your attention from repressed rage.  So, I also, from time to time, write down everything that has angered me, like people not showing up for the coffee social, etc.  It's funny that it snowballs into other issues that bothered me, but I didn't address them and they took root.  So, again, getting them out onto paper and then shredding the evidence :) is therapeutic and works for me.

Hi Shari,
I've taken his contemporary's training.  D. Carnegie had similar books, and i was able to see him speak when he was in his 90's, and he was inspiring!

George ordered the Norman Vincent Peale book I mentioned earlier!  What a happy surprise!  That made my day!

Hi Sunny!

It's okay.  We all have down days and don't know why.  The important thing, and it's what impresses me the most about you, is that you know it is a temporary feeling.  I'm really happy to hear that you are going to the circle dance, putting up the tree and visiting the neighbors with gifts.  I really believe when you do all of that you will feel so much better.  I know I always do.  It's good to get out, especially in the winter and interact with people or just get out for a fresh perspective.  I find it breaks my negative cycle and turns my day around for the better

Cheers!  Shari

Hi Shari:  Yes positive thoughts can keep you going, keep you motivated.  Right now I'm not feeling so great.  No spirit at all.  Trying to keep busy and understanding why I feel this way and that "this too shall pass".  I'm going to a circle dance tonight, was invited yesterday, don't feel like it, but it is a positive thing and I will go.  Putting the tree up today, don't feel like it either, but hopefully with some Christmas carols on etc. it will help to put me in the spirit.   I have been doing my outdoor walks and all, but ... just feel down.  I'm going to visit the neighbours with a couple of gifts.  I keep putting it off, that's how I know I'm not myself.  I was looking forward to it, now I don't feel like it.  I guess I am a bit depressed and trying hard to stay motivated.

Sunny not so sunny right now I guess, lol

Just a few good positive books...My retired Pastor recommended, "You Can If You Think You Can", by Norman Vincent Peale.  I'll have to order my copy on Amazon on pay day this Thursday.  "You Are What You Think", by David Stoop, Ph.D.  This one is great!  I lost my copy, somewhere, and was happy to find a copy at Wal-Mart, so I picked it up and will read it again.  It really goes along with this program and is a fantastic addition and reinforcement of what's learned here.  The last book is to honor one of my values of putting God first.  I got, "Trusting God Day by Day:  365 Daily Devotions", by Joyce Meyer.  This is to keep me in the moment and live one day at a time.  When I spend too much time in the past, thinking of the way things used to be, I get depressed.  When I think about the future I get anxious.  So, I want to live in the moment and enjoy the day and think about only today.  Tomorrow, I will think about tomorrow.  I want to fill my mind with positive books, movies, etc., because "you are what you eat" literally.  I have to vigilantly guard and protect my mind from negative input.  Just like I feel better when I eat healthy, I also feel better when I read positive words.  I probably should have put this on my blog, but it's already written, so I'll hit the post button :)
