difficult day affecting my outlook

Hi Summer,

Congratulations for your new job and everything you have accomplished! Very proud of you and you should be very proud of yourself. I love Sunny's advice!

Also, we all have setbacks very normal. Don't let them scare you at all. They will pass trust me they will pass. I have been doing very well thank God and I also took a trip to Disney 2 weeks ago with my kids which was 3 hours away from home and when I got back I felt like I can do anything now. Well, yesterday I had a awful migraine headache felt horrible and I started to feel a little anxious thinking lots of negative things the " what if's" BUT I said to myself I know where this is headed to and I put a big STOP sign and said oh no I am not going that route!

We need to talk to ourselves be positive think positive. I carry a little book with me that has helped me so much. In this little book I wrote on the top of the page Positive Thoughts numbered each positive thought for example:

1- It's just a panic attack I will be fine it will pass it always passes.
2-I am not going to die or loose control no matter what I may be feeling right now.
3-These symptoms I feel are just body symptoms they are not going to hurt me.
4-There is nothing wrong with me I am a healthy person.

You can create your own little book and take it with you  & when you feel something coming read it and remind yourself it's just anxiety & you will be ok and you will. Trust me.

Always, try to stay in the present moment not what happened yesterday or what will happen tomorrow just live the present moment. Life is good.. Maggie

Hi Summer,

It sounds like you are doing amazing!  You should be so proud of all the successes you have made, it really is great work.  Try not to let this little slip effect your confidence, it doesn't take away from anything you have accomplished this far.  Having set backs are actually a big part of the learning process.  They are normal and even essential to recovery.  The key is to use them as learning opportunities and not let them get you down.  What triggered the anxiety? How can you prevent it in the future? What would you do differently? What would you do the same?  Use these questions to grow.  The more little set backs you have the more you will learn and the better prepared you will be to handle anything life throws at you!

Keep up the great work.  We are all here to support you through it.

Hi Summer:  Congratulations on your new job.  Congratulations on driving back and forth.  Congratulations on not running away from the wave of panic which came while you were in the car.  All positives!  Give yourself a big pat on the back.  All these are success.
Don't think that because you've felt a wave of familiar panic come to visit that it will stay again.  Just say "hello" to it and acknowledge it, go with the flow of it, do some deep breathing (you were safe in your car, a good safe place) and positive self talk, such as "I am well, I am calm, I am at peace.  This is only passing through and won't stay".  You can try some distraction perhaps if that works better for you.  Such as looking at the licence plates of the other cars, or how many people are walking around, look at signs, billboards, whatever is around.  Don't forget when you get home again to reward yourself with something - a long hot bubble bath, a healthy drink/smoothie, just a little something to pamper yourself.
I think you've done very well.  Good luck, keep the faith and believe.

hi summer, i logged in today to start a thread about almost the exact same thing.

i think the key in our road(s) to recovery is to look at progress over a period of time. 8 weeks ago i was in hospital, unable to make eye contact with my parents, today im back at work. today i feel really anxious  but was able to breathe it out but 5 weeks ago that would have led straight to a panic attack and most likely me rolling around on the floor looking like a fool. today i suffered from depersonalisation but was able to self talk my way through it, 3 weeks ago i would be at emergency declaring that i have gone insane.

what im trying to say is, that we are all going to suffer from setbacks, no matter what. you have to accept it, learn from it and move on and over time you will see a difference. for example you drove 35 mins each way successfully, could you have done that a few weeks ago?

We are all here for you,

Hi summer,

you are doing fantastic, you are enjoying and living life, this has happened to me before its like the panic is trying to say hey dont forget about me your alter ego, dont give in this time Summer, Im not going to even though its scary, the only way we cant get better is to keep going, just take what you have learned and try your hardest to fight because even though you have had this attack you have also had good times and done some good things, if you go back to staying at home you will still have the panic and no good times, I know you can do it, I am going to try really hard as well

Hi, With the help of everyones comments and support and the program and book I'm using I felt like I was really making forward progress. I was staying home alone and becoming more comfortable. I actually interviewed for a part time job and started this past monday.I am happy to be teaching and being busy. I have to drive 35 min each way daily (which is a struggle within itself) but I did it on three occasions and have had success. I even started to not notice panic symptoms for two days in a row. Then yesterday I had an hour of downtime between working and meeting a colleague. I ate some food in the car and then began to panic. I didn't leave the situation (like I wanted to) and stuck with it. My fear level was high. And while eventually I got it to subside to about a moderate level of fear, I can now not shake the feeling and feel like I am starting to and/or wanting to regress back to the security behaviors. I am frustrated but scared as well because I was doing ok and now I'm not so sure. I feel my confidence is gone. Summer
