Hi Queens06:  One thing I learned about balance for myself is stopping when I felt tired.  I was the type of person who wanted to get everything finished in one go.  Couldn't wait for the next day.  Now when I feel tired, I stop and take a break and if it means waiting until the next day to finish, I'm o.k. with that.  Took awhile, but am very comfortable with it now.  I don't push myself as hard anymore.

Good luck,

Sunny

Yes it is just a blood test. You could take the results to a naturpath. I have in past use an ND. A problem with depression and to some extent with anxiety is the lack of exercise so we eat less or in most cases the wrong foods. It can at times be hard to get the vitamins and minerals in the quantities we need from food. This time of year there is also a lack of sunlight. I use a lamp and get blood tests done periodically. Calcium is the only thing I do on a how I feel basis. One thing I find hard is finding B vitamins in small enough doses. They are not stored. You should be eating foods with them regularly. The other problem is the foods high in them do not store well.

Here for you,

Hi Sunny, Thank you for taking the time to respond to my post I really appreaciate it! CBT will take a lot of time but it is worth it. There are certain things that I need to be vigliant about and that is making sure that I try to achieve some balance in my life. Thank you for responding. Hope all is well with you as well.

Hi Davitt, Thank you for your suggestions. I have often wondered if I am deficient as well. Is getting tested simply a matter of getting a blood test? Have you tried the naturpathic root as well? I would be interested in hearing your responce. Thank you again for your support!

Hi Quuens 06:  Glad to hear you are feeling more balanced.  Sounds like you are progressing in the right direction.  Glad you have restarted the CBT.  I know I read it more than a couple of times.  All the pieces of the puzzle fall into place and you can start working on exposure.  Really happy for you that you stuck with it and doing well.  Keep posting!

Hi.

I am chronically calcium deficient. Now I find I am low on zinc also. I am also low on B6 and niacin, two of the building blocks for seratonan. I also do not get enough sunlight. I would recommend getting tested for deficiencies. I don't recommend just taking a lot of vitamins, it is to easy to get out of balance. Eat well, sleep well, and if you are positive you need supplements take them but with care. Supplements are bad for being inaccurate as to what is really in the bottle. Some brands over supply the easily destroyed vitamins to be sure you get what it says. this can lead to overdosing. If some is good, more is NOT better.
Some vitamins are toxic in large doses. Some dilate blood vessels and could lead to stroke or aneurism. Some minerals can bind with others making them unavailable.
Get your doctors permission or approval first. But even at that if they make you worse, get retested. We all react different.

Here for you,
Davit.

Hi there,

I just wanted to thank everyone for taking the time to respond. I also wanted to update everyone as well. I am currently on 12.5mg of prozac titrating slowing to 20mg week by week. I am starting to feel like myself again. I've also noticed that I have been living with moderate depression for many years. I feel that the SSRI is "balancing" me out. I have been doing quite a bit of reading about anxiety and depression and finally it is all making sence. I can actually begin to read about it without getting overly anxious. I have also started to re-read the panic program again and I hope to begin my exposures slowly. I am starting to realize how factors such as chronic stress, diet, exercise and even sunshine affect serotonin levels and I am commited to working towards a balance.

Again, thank you for everyone who has given me their support. Looking forward to giving you more positive updates!

Hi Queens,

Glad you are doing well.

Kind of a complex question to answer... To be simple, let's just say that serotonin is synthesized from other protiens, and therefore you need to ingest those proteins as well as be doing the right things for that synthesis to take place. Like ususal, some of those 'right things' are getting enough sleep and nutrition, and generally taking care of yourself. When serotonin is produced, your brain uses it to make your mood positive.  Factors affecting serotonin levels are diet, stress, and even sunshine, (hence the reason for Seasonal Affective Disorder). So, it would be wise to be aware of these factors in your life to maximize this 'happy hormone' in your brain.

Hi Tiana and Juanita,

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I really appreciate it.

Juanita, I wish I could give you a  better answer re the memory issue, but I've just started on Prozac so I don't have a point of reference. I do feel that I am fretting a bit less and overall a bit calmer. It's a feeling that I havn't felt in a very long time.

Tiana, I feel as if it is getting me back to centre. I feel like myself again. Your analogy makes sence. I think taking the medication will make the CBT componenet easy to do and I hope to get back to the program soon. Tiana, I am hoping you can answer my question: Does chronic stress affect anxiety and serotonin levels? If so, how?

Hi Queens,
I started on the SSRI shortly after I started this program, about 7 months ago. For me it was my acceptance that I needed help to get and remain calm.  I desperatly wanted to change. The SSRI has worked for me. I was able to concentrate on the program and complete the sections.
The daily anxiety has all but gone, my thougths are mostly all positive...and if negative ones pop in...I roll them up in a ball and shoot them in the air(mentally)
That's how the med has helped me...before, when I thought about taking an elevator..it would have been all the "what ifs" and catastrophic thinking. I got myself terrified long before I actually had to take one. I had convinced myself that I would never be able to ride in an elevator!
Now, I am able to calmly question those thoughts, analyse them, and throw them away, use my  breathing technique, so getting in the elevator is not a problem for me. This took lots of time..it wasnt overnight...but now I automatically go to the elevator and not the stairs...no wonder I've put on a few pounds!
There is one thing I have noticed about me since my SSRI has really taken efect, and that is my memory...its not like I forget things forever, but things that used to stay on my mind just disappear...I'm not sure if thats because I'm fretting less, or thinking positively more, and 99% of the time its great, but a few times I think that I'm selfish, cause someone will say something to me that I had forgotten about, or not paid much attention to, and I feel selfish. Any thoughts on this?
Juanita
