Myth or Fact?

Samantha.

I have to comment on this for the new people. There is a difference between schizophrenia, Bipolar, etc. which are
diseases and panic attacks which is a disorder. Although panic disorders can have a chemical base such as a reaction to a medication, or an imbalance of seratonan or dopamine, for the most part it is improper thought process and curable with CBT and the temporary use of medication. Panic disorder is not a disease although it can be part of one, that needs constant administration of medication. Panic and anxiety disorders are totally curable, you do not have to live with them for the rest of your life. The program works if you follow it closely. Mental illness can only really be diagnosed by a doctor if you are not sure if you have a disease or a disorder. Disorders are far more common though in my experience.

Myth: Mental illness is a single, rare disorder.

Fact: Mental illness is not a single disease but a broad classification for many disorders. Anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, personality disorders, eating disorders and organic brain disorders can cause misery, tears and missed opportunities for thousands of Canadians.
