anxiety attack when I don't feel worried or stressed?

In regards to dealing with worrying about having attacks:

The following ten questions will help you to challenge any anxious thoughts. When you have an anxious thought, answer some of these 10 questions:

1. Is it "true"?
2. How do I know it’s true?
3. Is it 100% true? (remember something that is 75% or 99% true is
    not 100% true)
4. What's the evidence for it being true?
5. What’s the evidence against it being true?
6. Has it ever happened before?
7. What's different now?
8. If it were true, how bad would it really be?
9. What's the worst thing that could happen?
10. If the worst thing happened, how bad would it really be?

Please feel free to add any tips or strategies you find helpful when trying to challenge your anxious thoughts.

Hi Jennifer,

Thank you for sharing your story with us. There are many people within this support group that share the same questions and concerns as you.  We are all a group of individuals who support each other.

If you look to the left of the screen under "TOOLS" you will find many supportive tests.  These tests are not diagnostic tools and are not a replacement or substitute for a physician's advice. The purpose of these tests is to prepare you with information that you can present to your physician. When you're finished the test, you can either print your Final Report or email it directly to your doctor.

We also have developed a Panic Program.  This program is 12-weeks and involves the tools mentioned above.  Each session is based on the previous session, so we strongly advise that you work slowly through the program and not jump ahead.

These tests may or may not be for you but they are "free".  If you have any question or concerns with our “TOOLS”, you can contact us at support@paniccenter.net.  We are the Support Specialist for The Panic Center and are open to any questions or concerns you may have.

Please continue to strive forward and lean on us for support.

Hi,
My name is Jennifer and my anxiety issues and panic attacks began about 4 years ago, triggered from slight food allergy attacks that happened while driving and traveling, usually in the middle of nowhere for my current career at the time. At the time, I didn't know what was wrong with me. I thought I was dying or having some sort of heart attack. I started to become numb and tingly, lightheaded and hyperventilating. After several trips to the e.r. and several blood tests later, I found that I had an anxiety disorder. The only way to control my attacks was either taking sedatives or crying my eyes out, which eventually helped my breathing. I finally went to a doc and he put me on paxil cr and gave me ativan for short term relief of my attacks. The paxil ended up making me a totally different person. A person who didn't care about anything, lost interest in physical activity and sometimes social activities, and also made me extremely sluggish and sleepy. Finally, my doc just recently changed me to cymbalta and switched me to xanax for short term anxiety relief. But I am in the very early trial stages of this medicine, so I am still having slight panic attacks. Mostly, I am just super tense and my throat always tenses and closes up a bit, making it harder to catch my breath. But I have no idea as to what triggers my attacks now. It used to be my allergies and driving and being alone, as well as sometimes claustrophobia. Now, I am just so so irritable and constantly not enjoying life but nothing significant has made me act like this. My job is quite stressful, but I don't know what my worries are, except that I worry about having an attack. Who else has these problems and how have you learned to cope with it without meds? Please help with any advice you can give me. Thanks :)

My therapist told me to try a Xanax before bed hoping it would counter act the morning panic. but there was no difference. I fall asleep great, but wake up earlier than I should. It's very frustrating because I never had sleep problems before. My ibs is out of wack to. It started the same day. I hate taking any pills during the day. If I take 1/2 of a .25 xanax, it makes feel so weak and sleepy. My arms feel really weak and I am zoned out. I know this anxiety will pass. I just was really happy to feel more normal again.

i know that feeling of just being in your own bed and feeling panicky.. it just makes no sense...i have had my thyroid checked and  done  blood work and everything was good i was actually hoping it was a thyroid issue take meds and move on... but thank g-d   all is okay except my head....i do take a xanax when i feel that sense of anxiety it just curbs the blow tremendously but i feel kinda tired afterwards..check into that cuz it helps not to have a full blown attack.  also i don't sleep enough due to my kids who wake up multiple times a night and i think that has a lot to do with it..gonna try b12 vitamins and some exercise...i need to get thru the school year stable

I have read a variety of self help books. Claire Weekes had some good points. I am currently going to a psychotherapist. She squeezed me in yesterday. I felt so out of control. Shaking so bad, heart rate up high, hot sweats, ibs attack. I was a mess. Since this attack came on without any major stressors, she wants me to get a thyroid test and check for MVP. I had bloodwork done in 2007 and it was all good. I woke up this morning in a panic. Can't understand having panic just by opening my eyes. My sleep habits haven't been good  lately. Trying cognitive behavior and deep breathing exercises. I just want to feel normal again. Thanks for the support.

Hello Dana and welcome to the boards.

It is great to hear that even though you went through some rough patches, you have been feeling good for the past 3 weeks. If you reflect on the anxiety you experienced in regards to your son's teacher, it may have been triggered by the anticipation leading up to the news. Once you found out that your son got the teacher he wanted, it may have been a sense of relief for you. But because this is something that you were thinking about all summer, it may have triggered some extra anxiety for you as you accept and appreciate the news. With that being said, it can be difficult to know for sure what triggered this anxiety for you. Perhaps other members can add some extra insight?

Stay close to the boards Dana and let us know how this weekend and week goes for you. Good luck Dana and be well!

Hello. My name is Dana. I have had anxiety for 14 years. I have dealt with it primarily with self help. I did go to a therapist for a short time recently. The motivator for me was my daughter's graduation. I had been feeling pretty well. I was a little stressed about throwing her a great party. I got through it and everyone had a great time, but the day after I had a full blown panic attack. The anxiety level stayed for a month. I tried several medications, but they gave me horrible side effects so I went off of them. I have felt great the last 3 1/2 weeks. My son is 8 and he wanted a specific teacher for school this year. I was hoping he got the one he wanted. Yesterday we found out he did, so all is good. But, I woke up today and had a rapid heartbeat, tremors, hot feeling up my neck, and shakiness in my chest. I believe it was triggered by my son wanting that certain teacher. I never felt stressed or overly anxious about it. I just didn't want him to be disappointed. How can I get anxiety over that? Why wouldn't I feel anxiety while we were waiting all summer for the letter to come from the school? How can I stop the anxiety if I didn't even recognize I was having it?
Thank you for any help.
