Panic Attacks

Thank you for your list of questions. i am new to this and still can't figure out how to get in touch with folks in the support group. Is has been so encouraging to read that others get panic attacks. I was convinced that I 'caused" them. I fear being away from home at night because that's when my attacks seem to come. I am on lexapro and xanax as needed. I'd like to get off all meds. Can this be possible?

Thanks Ashley for the reply...in searching around the internet of course its dizzying the different pieces of advice that are out there...

Am wondering why my doc would have my take both Xanax (.5 mg) and want me on Paxil too--which i really dont want to start...two days now on just Xanax--twice a day and eveything "better"--of course hard not to think that next episode is around the corner

Trying the Box breathing, and progressive muscle relaxation, and will work out almost every day...hope it works!

Greetings, I'm brand new today. Does this really work? I've suffered for almost 7 years. I'm on meds with little help. There are 8 billion web sites. How can I know which is which. I'm even new at this computer stuff. 50+ gal needs some  support!

You need to figure out what is best for you.  Take your doctors advice, but I can understand your apprehensions about medication.  Look around the threads there have been many members who have not used medication and have been successful by using other coping strategies like yoga, positive thinking etc.

I think CBT would be a very good idea.  They say if clients go into the therapy with an open mind then the result can actually be chemical changes in the brain.  You can actually change your brain chemistry through your thinking! Albeit many others need medication as well.  I would look into it further and do a little soul searching before you make your decision.

Members anymore advice?

I just found this site, and am trying to find some relief--my doc wants me on Paxil, and of course in reading about it it sounds very tough at best....would love to find help without doing so...

Im like Silvana, where the physical attacks hit out of nowhere (began Jan 2009, currently occuring very regularly), im not in a stressful situation at all for the most part...and when they hit they hit hard...just cannot get comfortable, anxious as hell, i MUST move around--cannot sit still, etc..

Should i try this CBT first (and I have Xanax too) before going to the Paxil?

Someone help!  Thanks!

I wake up already in anxiety myself.  The best thing I've found to do is to get up and walk.  I walk up and down my hallway and it uses up some of the anxious energy I get.  While walking I try to figure out if I dreamt something that upset me and also tell myself that either it was just a dream or I should calm because if it was something "true" I would be able to remember what it was.  I also make sure I eat a little something, usually just a couple handfuls of cheerios and drink something cool, since I usually get nauseas during panic.

silvana,

When you are having a panic attack, and even when you are not, you should always try and challenge your negative thoughts.

The following ten questions will help you to challenge any anxious thoughts. When you have an anxious thought, answer some of these 10 questions:

1. Is it "true"?
2. How do I know it’s true?
3. Is it 100% true? (remember something that is 75% or 99% true is
    not 100% true)
4. What's the evidence for it being true?
5. What’s the evidence against it being true?
6. Has it ever happened before?
7. What's different now?
8. If it were true, how bad would it really be?
9. What's the worst thing that could happen?
10. If the worst thing happened, how bad would it really be?

Members, please feel free to add any tips or strategies you find helpful when trying to challenge your anxious thoughts.

Keep us posted on how you are doing silvana,

Hi Sarah,
How does one deal with panic attacks that come out of the blue when one is not thinking about anything or when one is asleep. That's what usually happens to me.

many thanks

Silvana
