Detoxification and Fasting

Living in industrialized societies with advancing technologies lend to some negative side effects. Among them is the toxic burden placed on human beings who are constantly exposed to toxins in the environment from air pollution, chemical solvents/cleaning products, gasoline fumes and by products of factory emissions, highly processed foods and more.

These toxins are introduced into the body in various ways – through the skin, breathing, and eating or drinking. If not eliminated properly, the toxins accumulate in the body and settle into cells………in particular fat cells.

When embarking on a healthy weight program, detoxification should be the primary first step. Our strongest ally in the effort to detoxify is water. Drink at least eight to 10 glasses of filtered, distilled or spring water each day. Water can also help to curb the appetite. In fact, a hungry feeling may be the body’s first call for water. Whenever hungry, try drinking a large glass of water first – this may quell your desire for food. Even if the hunger returns, you’ll be inclined to eat less at the meal that follows. Adding a few drops of fresh lemon juice boosts water’s cleansing potential.

Fasting is one of the oldest and most effective detoxification methods. It has been practiced by many cultures since the beginning of time, and is still a current practice. Many people can benefit from going without solid food for 1 to 7 days or so. This gives the digestive system a “break” and allows the body to utilize this energy towards cleansing and eliminating the build-up of “garbage” that has accumulated over the years. Fresh fruit or vegetable juice fasts are easy on the body.  These provide the body with high concentrations of vitamins, minerals and enzymes to aid in the cleansing process.

Fruits with a high water content such as grapes and citrus varieties are favourites for detoxification and weight loss. Pineapple is high in the digestive enzyme bromelain which aids digestion and promotes weight loss.

Members, share your thoughts on detoxification and fasting and if you would consider adding these to your weight loss program.
