foods to help reduce anxiety

Hi DB

You are correct...it's completely related to the yeast issue I mentioned.  Sugar is the greatest culprit.  That being said I am a sugar junkie... and the lower I get the worse it is... the more sugar I crave.  Like you my blood sugar tests came back negative BUT my doctor says it plays a huge role in your daily living ups and downs...

There are a few books and articles out there that tell you if you can balance your blood sugar it will help alleviate anxiety, depression and ocd symptoms.

I personally have found this to be true but once I start to feel better I throw all my good eating habits out the window and start eating sugar... small quantities at first..but soon a little becomes a lot and I'm back not feeling tip top.

I love tea....  and chamomile helps me when I can't sleep too.

I can also drink caffeine though anytime....  probably comes from having worked at Starbucks.. I built up some sort of immunity...LOL...

People with panic disorder have a real problem with sugar and more importantly blood sugar levels.  I don't have much substantial to back up what I'm saying here - it's just my personal opinion and slight fact.

EVERYONE gets irritable, anxious and unsteady when they haven't eaten in a while and their blood sugar levels are low.
The effects of blood sugar levels are pretty much the same in everyone, and they resemble anxiety symptoms.

Feeling: faint, dizzy, blurred vision, difficulty concentrating, craving sweet things, fatigue, restlessness, etc.
Sound farmiliar?

When you are anxious, you are releasing that fight or flight hormone, adrenaline, into your body.  In turn, this makes you alert, ready to flee or fight.  This burns energy/sugar.

If you are constantly on edge, and persistantly anxious - you have a higher level of adrenalin going through your body and therefore burn sugar faster than you would normally.

As your blood sugar levels dip; you start to feel the normal sensations of hunger, along with anxiety caused by feeling those sensations.

When I first started suffering, I thought I had hypoglycemia.  This is when the body cannot regulate sugar properly.  In fact, the tests came back negative.  It was just that I was more aware of my blood sugar levels being low.

Or perhaps I'm talking nonsense!

Hi! Everyone,
I haven't been posting or checking in to much but this conversation caught my attention.  Great advice here! Hadn't thought much about diet.... Green tea is wonderful but it kills my stomach for some reason.  Chamomile tea I think someone mentioned that?  Maybe I could try that.  Staying away from sugar...that could be my problem.  I'm a sugar freak :(
I'll keep reading your info, Thanks!

I should, I suppose, also equally mention the benefits of green tea.  It has antioxidants.  Most impressively, a study has shown that green tea drinkers burn an average of 60 calories more per day.  However, I would think that anyone drinking caffeine would burn extra calories simply by being more alert/active.

I can not emphasise enough just how brilliant I think camomile tea is, however.  It really does have very very mild natural sedative properties.

For example, I was in a cafe the other day, on quite a nervous day.   I was meeting an old friend and was generally quite nervous about the whole thing, as I've not been in that kind of situation in a long time.

I ordered some camomile tea when I was there, and felt calmer after a pot of it.  Whether or not I just settled, I don't know - but I would say the tea helped.

Hi Diva,

Green tea has just about as much caffeine as coffee, I'm afraid.

I tried drinking coffee a few days ago - not a good idea...  It just flared up my anxiety, which I hadn't felt all day.
And yet I can eat a bar of chocolate, which also has caffeine, and I feel fine.

A few nights ago, I had alcohol in the first time in a few weeks - and I felt absolutely normal.  Yet I can't touch coffee.  Quite strange.

Also, I find that caffeine... How can I tactfully say?... Loosens the bowels...

Hiya,

Have a question that is food related. I figured I would ask here .

I keep reading about the virtues of white and green tea for your health.. Green tea mostly. As such was tempted to have a cup here and there. Things is though I know most things with the word tea in it is full of stimulants! I only drink herbal or fruit teas that have no stimulants. I was wondering where in the stimulant spectrum grean and white tea fell. Because if it is not too high in stimulant I might try a bit of it in the morning but if it is anything as strong as say Earl Grey tea I won't touch the stuff!

Anyway, if anyone has any info on this I would really appreciate it!
