Hey Gene, I think it is great that you are making progress. As for your presentation, I know you can do thisé Keep us posted!

Hi Gene,

I've had experience with that.  I hosted, spoke at and answered questions to a conference of over 200 health management workers and government ministers.  I would say that the apprehension was actually worse than the event, as is mostly the case.

I know what you mean about feeling as though you are fine, then a panic attack coming along to set you back.

One of the members on here once said that you have to treat panic disorder like diabetes.  Too much sugar for diabetics will cause problems, and to some extent, stress or pressure is our sugar.

But the fallacy in the metaphor is that I don't believe you have to worry about your panic on a day to day basis.
You have to truly believe that you will get over your panic for good.  And the only way I know how to do that, is stop fearing them.

When you've been through one 'spell' of panic - you know what to expect.  You learned and coped and built techniques to work on it - so there's nothing to fear.

If it comes again - it will be nothing like the first time.  Because you've built up resistance.  Not immunity, but resistance.

Congratz on overcoming your PA so quickly, Gene!  Kinda funny, it used to be so scary to look back, but now I look back and I see so many things that I've improved on.  Of course, it probably also helps that I don't focus too much on it, just smile and then keep moving forward.

That presentation sounds like a big one, but to be invited to do such a thing, must mean they already have great respect for your work.  You'll do great!  I have to deal with 800+ doctors, police, nurses and mental health pro's next week, so I definitely feel the pressure your feeling...but I've come this far, so I'm determined to do this.  I'm doing exposure therapy everyday this week to prepare.  But still...AH!

After writing here last night I had a mini-PA! Typical. My arrogance came back to bite me in the behind. But the thing is that it lasted for only a couple of minutes and the intensity was say a 6 not like the 10's I used to have. So not even a real PA. And today I feel fine. Non of those after effects from a PA. So really I still feel somewhat triumphant regarding my panic attacks.

I would say that meds have had little or no effect yet. I am waiting for them to kick in now. I have been on meds for about three weeks so they won't have had much of an effect yet. However, I do believe that using them has given me hope and I am eagerly waiting for the full effect to take place. I will definately post about any changes I feel due to the meds because I waited over four months before I decided to take them so I know that I would have liked some more info about how they have affected others. Dazedmommy, Cael and I think CD have given really good feedback about their meds. So I thank them as they certainly helped me make the decision to use them.

The presentation I am giving is about the results from my research into the genetic effects of a specific carcinogen. I will presenting at a medical congress. Gulp...

Hi Ya Gene:

Congratulations on seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, way to go!

I hope you don't mind me asking but do meds play a part in your recovery and if so how much of a part did they play?

Hi Genejockey,   Thanks for your post............no doubt it is encouraging and will provide hope for many who read it.   It's great to see that you feel you are on your way to conquering your panic attacks and that CBT has proven to be an effective method for you, along with other therapies you have used.   You mentioned that you have a presentation in November..........what is it about?  Best of luck with that and do let us know how you fare.     Faryal, Health Educator

I haven't seen any posts here for a few days so I thought I would post something.

I have had panic disorder for over five months. I have never a panic attack (that I can remember) in all my life until this all began when I had a PA in the gym. But for the last month I would say that I have not had a real panic attack. Two weks ago I had a mini anxiety attack. That's all. This progam and these forums have helped a tremendous amount. I have had many wonderful "chats" with so many amazing people here. People who have all experienced similar issues and who can really empathise with one another.

I wanted to write here to perhaps give some hope to somebody who at the moment cannot forsee an end to this. I am not suggesting that I have seen my last PA. But that thought no longer haunts my every waking moment. The panic will go away. CBT is an effective method to fight panic attacks. There are quite few people here who have conquered their fear and elliminated panic from their lives.

My own current personal goal is to present my research results at a congress on the first of Novemeber. I have been invited to present so I have to give a 45 minute presentation to a few hundred people. A few months ago I would never have been able to do this but now I feel confident that I will be able to do it.
