Developing Healthier Core Beliefs

johnnyO,

What a great way of looking at success, something that only you can define for yourself. It seems that you have a very positive attitude and outlook on life, hang on to it!
Thank you for your inspirational words

thanks for your comments Birdie.  I can relate to doing comparisons, sometimes guilty in both directions. Better than, less than, superior, inferior.  The greatest decision is to just consider all equal.

And I learned long ago that Success is something that only you can define for yourself.  Some people buy into some stereotype of success.  If a greenpeace boat blocks a whaler from killing a whale, that is their success.  Did they acquire a car or money?  Success for many on the forum is overcoming obstacles that others may value less,  but we can measure our successes on our own scale.

I ran my first triathlon many years ago.  I was dead last.  You can only imagine how successful I felt for just finishing.  Success these days is just getting to work every day.  Sometimes I don't feel that I accomplish as much as I should,  but my job coach says to think in small increments of improvement.

I'm always assuming the worst will happen.  So I would like to try and challenge that.  Not sure if that goes along with the idea of negative core belief but it's something I just really became aware of. I will project that I will fail at something new instead of looking at how I might succeed.  It's really something I need to address cause I think that feeds my anxiety.  I've really had lots of wonderful successes and I think people would look at my life on the out side and think I am very successful.  I really do have a wonderful family, job and home BUT, I always am questioning my ability to measure up to others and assuming someone else is better qualified then I am.

Members, Now that you’ve had an opportunity to take a look at what some of your negative core assumptions are, it’s time to start working on developing healthier core assumptions. Here are a few guidelines to follow:
  • One of the biggest problems is working on too many negative core assumptions at a time. Try to stick with one at a time.
  • Remember, your negative core beliefs have been with you for a long time and it will take some time to change them. This is a long-term project.
  • Keep your goals reasonable & reachable. If you think you’re “unlovable” today, you won’t become perfectly lovable next week. Instead decide what lovable means to you. Does being more lovable mean having more friends? Never being alone?

What negative core belief will you tackle first?
