TMJ and anxiety

17 years ago 0 207 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I have this all the time and I have noticed that it is linked to my anxiety because on days that I am really tense I have tightness in the jaw, jaw pain, I find it hard to open my mouth wide and I even get ear pain. I have never been diagnosed with it but my doctor mentioned that it could be the culprit of my jaw pain, stiff neck, and ear pain. But when I am anxious I tend to clenched my teeth without even realizing it and then the pain sets in. It is really painful at times. I am going to do some of the exercises mentioned but you are definitely not alone. ~Isabella~

Dear Angel, Thank you for the exercises. With the second one whereby you bring your jaw forward, did you have to bring your lower jaw forward only to the point where the front upper and lower teeth meet. I am assuming in that case you have an overbite . Or did you have to bring the jaw further than that. Thank you. :)

Hi Radha, I also had a bit of this after a small accident. There are some exercises you can do for the jaw. Maybe you can look some up on the net (not sure if they have it, but worth a try). one of them is to open your mouth really wide, as much as you can open it. Hold for 5-7 seconds, and release slowly. Do this maybe 3 times when you feel tense. Another one is to bring your jaw foward. What i mean is, bring the bottom part of your mouth foward (like your stretching your jaw). You look funny in the mirror when you do it, so dont worry! Hold that again for 5-7 seconds. Mind you, im' not a physio therapist or doctor. So please dont hurt yourself. I just learned these from a physiotherapist i went to. There are more exercises you can do that really help. As i said, talk to your doctor or even try looking it up on the net. Hope you feel better. just hang in there! It will go away! And it IS CURABLE...i promise! Dont listen to them when they say its not. You can cure yourself from anything! Hope i helped!

Hi, I was wondering whether anyone else in the group has TMJ (temporamandibular joint) disorder. I have been struggling with this problem for quite a bit and I find that it seems to be linked with the anxiety levels. Some mornings I wake up and feel my jaw and neck muscles are relaxed and the anxiety levels on that day is pretty low. Does anyone have any relaxation tips on how to relax the jaw and neck muscles. Would appreciate any help/suggestions. Thank you
