Hi everyone! I totally understand those dizzy feelings!!! I used to get them ALL THE TIME, even after I went on Effexor. Try to remember, these feelings are 99% likely to be caused by inadequate breathing. I bet because you feel anxious or have anxious thoughts (even if you aren't conciously aware of them) and you are holding your breath or breathing very shallowly or high up in your chest. This causes a temporary and NOT HARMFUL decrease in blood supply to your head thus causing the dizziness and vertigo. The solution: take some nice deep breaths and release them very slowly focusing on how much more relaxed you are becoming. Don't worry, my psychologist told me that she has never heard of anyone fainting from a panic attack or losing their balance to the point where they fall down. It is just a sensation that can quickly be rectified (<-heheheh funny word)by taking some calming breaths. Have you ever read the book "Don't Panic" by Reid Wilson? It really helped me ALOT! Another book called "The Anxiety Workbook, Revised Edition" is also excellent. Good luck and hang in there! One day, we will all get through this and look back at this journey as a beneficial lesson to better our lives or the lives of others. Jen

Carol and Alison, I don't know if this will help but I also experienced the same dizziness. I find it comes when I am anxious. I can remember when I was really struggling emotionally sometimes I would feel like I was on a boat. So what is happening to you is "normal". Try not to let it add to your fears (that is so easy to say and soooooo hard to do). I know what you mean about hearing stories about cancer and things and getting worked up about it. If I see two things about breast cancer in a week I begin to think maybe it is a sign and I have it (oh the way our thoughts drive us!). I am finding this site a real encouragement. Here we can find people who have the same struggle we do - dealing with our thoughts.

Hi Alison. I am on no medication for panic and I have the dizzy feelings as well, When I roll my head around or move it too fast it gets worse. I get worried about it and my husband reminds me that I read a lot obout dizzy feelings on this site. I get a heavy feeling on the top of my head, its really weird. One week i felt it at the back of my head. Today I have had a lot of dizzy feelings and that heavy feeling and at times my legs feel really rubbery. So, I guess I don't think its a side effect of medication but something that goes along with panic disorder. What do others think? Carol

thanks brabak & lulu. Feeling better mentally, just a little bit dizzy, I think. It's really bad when I move my head around fast which leads me to believe it could be something to do with fluid in my middle ear. Did feel better when I read 8 million people go to the doctor in the states a year complaining of dizziness, third most common complaint after headache and backache ( hey googling finally did me good!)

Thanks. Went to work today, was doing well until I heard about a highschool student that died this week from a horrible disease. THEN, starting talking another teacher about the obituary by her desk of a young woman you had sore legs then died 4 weeks later from a cancer that had spread throughout her entire body (cancer was cutting off her circulation in her legs), she was married with 2 kids. It had spead so badly then had no idea where it started. I HATE when I hear those stories. The reality is those stories exist everyday I need to learn how to deal with them! Thanks for sharing your dizzy story - it helped!

Not sure if this makes you feel any better -- but I feel dizzy right now. I've also been feeling like this lately, one time I got really dizzy that I was sure I was going to pass out. But I didn't. Sometimes it feels like my head is spinning, or the floor is moving underneath me. I use to get really panicky about it, too. I thought it meant something is wrong with me. I use to (and sometimes still do) analyze it - thinking to myself, "maybe I am not eating enough", or "maybe I am not breathing right", or "maybe I am sick". However, I've felt like this many times before and nothing bad has ever happened. So I've come to realize that it is just a symptomn of anxiety and it can't hurt me.

Hi everybody! I've taken the occasional xanax at night these days. Have taken one 2 nights in a row (only 0.25mg). Last night sitting on the couch (before I took it) was super dizzy for about 5 seconds, like vertigo. Tonight I was out for my birthday and as I was walking in a underground parking garage and was extremely dizzy/lightheaded walking, went to babysitters to get the kids and was dizzy standing there. I am totally panicked RIGHT NOW as I am working tommorow. Called the pharmacist and they said a dose only last 12 hours at the most. So how could the xanax last that long? I am in a bad spot mentally right now, I've been doing so good lately too! To add to it, it's my birthday which makes me think about death (I know I need help!) any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks for reading
