I need help

Welcome to the forum Worthy. You are right on. We go back to booze for the "Effect produced by alcohol". There is a paragraph in the doctors opinion of the book alcoholics anonymous:

Men and women drink essentially because they like the effect produced by alcohol. The sensation is so elusive that, while they admit it is injurious, they cannot after a time differentiate the true from the false. To them, their alcoholic life seems the only normal one. They are restless, irritable and discontented, unless they can again experience the sense of ease and comfort which comes at once by taking a few drinks-drinks which they see others taking with impunity. After they have succumbed to the desire again, as so many do, and the phenomenon of craving develops, they pass through the well-known stages of a spree, emerging remorseful, with a firm resolution not to drink again. This is repeated over and over, and unless this person can experience an entire psychic change there is very little hope of his recovery.

I almost always suffer anxiety or panic attacks when I want to stop,  It's so lame to me.  I must quit drinking, I can't just have one.  I wish you success and I hope I can have it too

Hi Alicia50,

I am sorry to hear about your anxiety and your concern about drinking. I can understand why you would be anxious, it sounds like it was a dangerous situation the other night, especially mixing the sleeping pill with alcohol. Is there a possibility to remove sleeping pills or have a loved one hold them for you until you are more in control of the alcohol use? I am sorry to be so assertive but I am concerned for your safety.

The good news is that you are here and you are looking to make a change. That is the hardest part. Are you hoping to moderate or abstain from alcohol? Have you attempted cutting back or abstaining in the past? If so, what was your experience?

Panic attacks can be incredibly hard to deal with and alcohol can contribute to anxiety, especially the next day. A good exercise to try while in a panic attack is grounding and abdominal breathing. Deep abdominal breaths can be enough to quiet the attack. For grounding focus on your senses - look for 5 things you can see and really immerse yourself in your sight sensation. Then listen for 4 different sounds; for example, cars outside, fridge running, etc. Then touch three different touch sensations and be mindful of the feeling. Is it soft, hard, cold or warm? Then smell two different scents. It can be the shirt you are wearing, a candle, anything in your area. Finally, taste one thing. It can be anything including water. Be very mindful of the taste. That is grounding. It might take a few attempts but that usually stops a panic attack.

I know it has been a few days since you posted last. How are you feeling today?

Alicia,
I was in such a dilemma little over 10 years ago. I reached a point where alcohol wasn't helping me. I had a drink large quantity of booze. My shrink lead me to AA and after few months of struggle, I ran into a speaker tape on the internet. It was such a powerful talk that lead me to work the 12 steps quickly and was able to experience the power the program talks about. Today, I have no desire to drink alcohol. The obsession has been lifted and its such a liberation. I have to just keep my emotions under check. I understand the internal un-manageability is what will lead me back into the blind spot where a drink will look very good choice. Hence I work hard to keep the "Relationship wit the NOW" the most important part of my life. Like Ekchart Tolle points out in the daily reminders:

A vital question to ask yourself frequently is: "What is my relationship to the present Moment?".

Hi Alicia,

Welcome to the site. I can completely relate to what you are going through. The most important thing is to get help and this forum is a great place to start. You're not alone in this challenge. Especially with the panic attacks. There are lots of avenues to get help, whether it's a rehab program, a local counselling program, AA, SMART (http://www.smartrecovery.org)...... I found a local program nearby and it was provided free of charge and had excellent counsellors and group sessions. The important thing is to STOP drinking because when we drink everyday and it escalates (and it always does) it will only get worse. There is hope, regardless of how many times you've tried in the past, you can stop. You've taken a huge step by reaching out here and please continue to post because you'll get a lot of positive support.

All the best,

I have a bad problem with alcohol. I drink maybe a bottle and more a wine a day. Last night I took sleeping pill as well and drank some whisky . Seems like I walked into a door and now I have a huge bump on my forehead which is turning into a bruise. I'm not sure, I can't remember .  I am sitting here in the midst of a huge panic attack. I can barely breath. I have tried to stop before so many times .
