looking for support

Thanks for sharing Destiny, and all the best on your journey. I found the Check Your Drinking survey in the toolbox to be quite an eye opener. It told me how much money per year I spend on alcohol (yikes), how many calories/pounds I have consumed (double yikes), and showed me that over 75% of women my age drink one alcoholic drink (or less) per week (take that denial). I am on day 2, so can only comment on how I got through day 1, but basically I kept myself very, very, very busy until bedtime. And I didn't sit in front of the TV at all (that's where I normally drink). Good luck to you sister!

Hi Destiny,

Just wanted to wish you the best. I've seen almost exactly what you describe in my own family (functioning career wise, heavy smoking, hiding your addiction), and even see these things developing in myself. When did you start drinking? When did you first try quitting?

Welcome Destiny,

It sounds like you really want to make this change but you are not quite sure how to do it. Well, you have come to the right place. We will support you through this. First of all, read as much as you can. Read the program here, read through the forums and find any resources in your community. Learn about withdrawal symptoms and possibly talk to a nurse or addictions counsellor about withdrawal management. If you feel you need more support I encourage you to seek out an addictions counsellor or program in your area. Whatever you do just keep informing yourself. Do you feel you want to moderate or abstain at this point? When do you think you will be ready to get started?

Welcome Destiny71,

It sounds like you are looking at making a change.  Are you wanting to moderate or abstain?  There are lots of great books and blogs that will give you information and advice about the journey.  Working through the toolbox on this site, keeping the diary and journalling I found really helpful to get started.  There are supportive people on this site as well.  Congratulations for the courage to reach out here and your honesty.  That is definitely the first step and you have taken it!

Hello everyone. I'm a 44 year old female from Canada. I have been struggling with alcohol my whole life in one form or another. I find myself currently in a rather bad spot. I'am starting to really frighten myself with my drinking and hope that I can get it under control. I guess you could say that I'am a functioning alcoholic as I work full time. Everyday I go to work at 7 and I'm home by 3. Most of these days I'm drunk by 5. Other than work I don't seem to get anything accomplished as I sit drinking and smoking in my garage. I definitely hide it well and although I have tried to reach out to friends for help no one takes me seriously. I am engaged to a wonderful man however he is definitely an enabler. I want my life back. I'm tired of this endless cycle. I want to be able to even get through one entire day alcohol free...and trust me I've tried. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
