The greatest obsession of the abnormal drinker:

Yes, for me too, there where times when I was able to way away with just one or two drinks. But then the book talks about crossing that invisible line where we go beyond a point of no return. The worse thing was, every time I would decide not to drink or I would make those just drink during the week-end decisions.....My mind would trick me into believing that this time it will be ok. This is how, I am going to drink "Miller low calorie beer" or a glass of Natural wine....!

Later when I read this section, I realized the problem centers in my mind and its not the 1st drink:

These observations would be academic and pointless if our friend never took the first drink, thereby setting the terrible cycle in motion. Therefore, the main problem of the alcoholic centers in his mind, rather than in his body. If you ask him why he started on that last bender, the chances are he will offer you any one of a hundred alibis.

All the promises will be tossed aside, I have had a stressful Monday/Tuesday......

Hi Foxman, yes, we all have that wish.  I have, from time to time, managed to have that "one" drink, but I find it is far, far, more difficult to drink one drink than to drink none.  From the first moment I had my first drink, I was always watching and waiting, thinking and fussing about where/how my next one would come.  So, yes, we delude ourselves in thinking that we have any control over our drinking.  Thanks for your insight.

Quote from the book Alcoholics Anonymous:

"""The idea that somehow, someday he will control and enjoy his drinking is the great obsession of every abnormal drinker. The persistence of this illusion is astonishing. Many pursue it into the gates of insanity or death. """

When I read the above, i thought how true it is. How many vain attempts to control it, but couldn't and then the recent deaths of my close family members I could see the insanity and the death side. Truly tragic.  And the book goes on to say, some of us have gone beyond a state where human aid could help. A psychic change should happen in order for some of us to survive.
