109 days ...

Congratulations on 5 months John! An outstanding achievement. Well done!

Regarding the smell of alcohol, I find I lean toward "gag-reflex" when I smell it directly, particularly scotch. :)

Keep going! I found the last few days leading in to 6 months was particularly long. Not sure why. Glad tp be past it and I look forward to you rolling over the odometer at the end of the month!

Best regards,

Dave

Thanks all for the comments and support!

LisaDawn, don't forget that even if the string of days is interrupted, the total consumption is way down, and that itself is a huge change. I hope the last 30 days have been better for you as you sound down.

ToxicSoul, I wonder if the smell or thought of alcohol will turn me off -- I don't think so. I love the smell of nice red wine and scotch.

John

Captain John: my last post was all about me but I wanted to make a few comments about you. You sound totally different then when I was here this fall. You had been going through a rough time but now you seem to be right on track with your life now and living a happier life. Whether a person who drinks or not I think this is how all the world operates by deciding how they will respond to situations so it seems you have figured out how not to respond. That is a huge accomplishment. Last night I was bored which is anxiety in a way and my response was not what I would have wanted so I will remember your post and how not to respond. Lisa

Congratulations Captain John. I was on this site before in the fall. I was going to totally abstain and I did for a number of weeks. I got help with my anxiety issues. I thought because I got help I could drink moderately but I am kidding myself. I think I considered moderate not getting falling down drunk. Which I only did once since the fall. The rest of the time I didn't make a fool of myself. Last night I was bored and my husband was bored so we had a couple drinks. I had 5 and I feel miserable about it this morning. I don't want to have any so I will start at day 1 today. I just don't like it anymore and I want something new in my life. I want a life without alcohol. As I right that my mind was already saying not very often after that sentence which shows I have a problem if I can't completely abstain. There have been some great successes even when I wasn't on this site. I have faced many more things sober then I had previously to being on this site so I will build on that. Looking forward to having and giving support. LisaDawn

Fantastic Captain John, congrats to you! Although you say that the battle will never end I'm wondering while the possibility of a relapse always exists, as with any addiction, eventually once enough time has passed, your cravings take a back seat while your coping skills trump. I am hoping that this is the case for you now.  I quit a two pack a day smoking addiction many years ago although it took about five years for all of the cravings to stop, I am now disgusted by the smell and know I will never go back. I'm confident that will be the case with alcohol. Eventually after enough time has passed the smell of booze on someone else will be unpleasant to me which will help me to keep my resolve in social situations and the constant replay of how I feel about myself after a day/night of drinking will help me through other difficult times.

Well done Captain, I am hoping to be able to say the same when I reach my goal. I am going to take it every day as it comes. Instead of my now traditional Saturday visit to the pub (where I would end up spending most of the day and most of my money) I am going to Costa Coffee.
