How do you manages urges to drink?

good point Dave,
I am going to add thirsty to that list as in thirsty/tired. I have used straight up shots of vodka, or bourbon to solve insomnia at 3 in the morning. I know it sounds disgusting, and it is!! But, it would put me to sleep. I don't do it often, but when i have that night that I'm tossing and turning and wide awake, sure as s**t, I'd do a shot or two as a last resort.
Fortunately, it has been a while since I've had to pull out the absolute. In fact I don't remember the last time I did.

It's interesting. I've seen this list as part of strategies put forth to address cravings and urges when quitting drinking. Just curious why they don't have "Thirsty" on this list? Being hungry vs thirsty are 2 entirely different things. If I'm hungry I typically don't consider having a drink. When I'm thirsty an ice-cold beer looks pretty bloody appetizing. When I been really wanting a drink I have found it is when I am thirsty. As soon as I re-hydrate the thought goes away. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 glasses or water or iced tea, etc to get past it but it's worked EVERY time.

Additionally, I never really want to drink after I've had a big meal. I suppose this goes along with hungry.

Bored and relentless are 2 others that seem to an issue, although I personally struggle with the idea of being bored. If you're bored you aren't living. Restless....well, get off your ass and do something. More an excuse or something a whiny kid might say. (I remember those days well....."I'm bored....." my child says....after 10x it's "Keep talking kid, your making me thirsty...." :) 

It really helps to step back and laugh at yourself.

Usually when I get a craving, I do a mental checklist to see if any of the above apply, and usually one or more do, so then I can deal with the real problem.

Most people experience strong desires, urges or thoughts about drinking alcohol when they start to cut down or quit. It helps to recognize that these urges, desires and thoughts are natural and that there are things you can do to maintain your goal. 
Many different people have found many different ways to cope with their desires, urges or thoughts about drinking. The following are some of the most common ways that others have used to deal with the urge or desire to have a drink when they know they shouldn't. Pick the strategies that make sense to you: 
· Drink nonalcoholic beverages (e.g., water,soda, pop, juice, coffee, tea) 
· Eat some food 
· Engage in other activities (e.g., walking, sports, hobbies, distract yourself by working around the house) 
· Engage in activities with others who aren't drinking to distract you and help you get over the urge 
· Think about how much money you'll save by not drinking 
· Try not to think about your desire to drink 
· Think about the benefits of not drinking 
· Reassure yourself that the thoughts and desires will go away on their own 
· Avoid places or situations where you'll have the urge to drink (e.g., parties, bars, or sporting events) 
· Try to identify what's causing the desire to drink 
· Review your Toolbox to remember what you've learned from this program 
· Help other people who can benefit from you advice or experience 
Remember, if one method does not work well for you, you can try something else.
