I really dislike some of the hard core people there and I hated attending meetings (mandatory). Where I live now there are some real rough characters and it make me very nervous. Plus I want to cutback not necessarily quit altogether and AA does not support that. I will use the toolbox . thanks you for your reply

Hi Cpm,

Welcome to the AHC!  You've made a great decision to join the online community.  It's a very supportive group sharing similar experiences and available to offer advice and support when needed.
What strategies did you use in the past to help you cut back/abstain from drinking?
I recommend using the toolbox section of the website.  Focus on the topics 'Cutting Back' and 'Changing the Rules'.  Both chapters provide you with strategies that you can try to help cut back on how much you drink. Keep us posted on what works for you and what doesn't.
With regards to AA meetings, what did you not like about them?  What has been most helpful in the past?

Hello all this is only my second time on this site and the first to post.  I retired in January 2013 and my drinking has gotten progressively worse. I am 55 years old  and have done AA in the past and have achieved as much as 4 years of sobriety. But I really do not like AA. I have been in an out of AA since the year 2000. I do not want to quit drinking all together but want some moderation. I do not drink daily but when I do drink I usually drink too much and have black outs. Now that I am retired I play on a womens golf league and guess where we go after golf? to the bar of course and when I start to drink I cannot stop at one or two. I would like some advice on how to do this effectively or of any medications etc. that may help me. I have a 15 yr old at home and do not like doing this in front of her, but I continue to screw up. Can you help?
