I need to take my own advice and start eating healthier again. For the most part I no longer snack on junk food during the day, but I eat a lot of nuts. I still drink too much diet soda as a replacement for the alcohol, and I especially need to work on the fiber. I would love to lose exactly twelve pounds before my 50th birthday, which is in three months. (Where's that magic pill?) Even so, just think -- if we ever do meet each other, we will all be so healthy and together! I have got to clean up my home office this morning before the kids wake up, so I'll talk to you later. Have a great day today.

Hey Turquoise, I think you'll get a kick out of this.  A little while ago I was reading your post about the healthy food choices, and the foods that will help with cleansing the liver....all the while I was eating a bag of Doritos....lol.  Anyway thanks to your post I quickly put the bag down and ran to the grocery store to load up on fruits, veggies and a healthy trail mix.  Thank you for kicking me in the pants.  I am going to try to eat healthy while attempting to rid myself of the monster.  I do tend to crave sugar when I don't drink, but I've heard that is quite normal.  I'll have to find other foods to curb the sugar cravings, in a much healthier form than junk food.

Today was a bit less stressful at work, it had its moments, but it wasn't all day long.  I made it through day two without any booze and I even refused a drink when my husband offered to mix one for me.  I kept busy after dinner with yardwork and I helped my daughter clean up her mess of art work on the diningroom table.  Now I'm enjoying a quiet evening while my husband and daughter have gone to see a movie.  I'm feeling a bit more positive today and thank you Turquoise for reminding me that in my struggle to control my alcohol, I've had many successes.  I guess you're right....I have only had one slight hangover since we met....before we met it was probably every other day that I felt like crap.  I have been controlling it in some way, but I'd like to be able to get it totally under control and not feel like my life revolves around what drink I'm going to have at the end of the day.  I admit, when I walk into the liquor store, I feel like a kid in a candy store.  I could easily lose control of my spending and buy whatever looked good to me.  It's like I'm on a high when I enter the building.  That scares the bejesus out of me.

Well I'm off to get ready for bed.  Have a great evening.

Again Turquoise, thank you for the wonderful information. The one thing in my favor is I do eat healthy, natural food and am not a fast food junkie. I think that is what has helped me keep my health and of course exercise is a big part of my life too. I truly believe that exercise can help your mood as well as your physical body so hope everyone gets out for a nice walk or jog today..

Yikes, the thread cut me off -- I guess I'm way too wordy this morning!!! The last part of my post was supposed to be:

The liver thrives on good fats such as omega 3 fish oils and healthy omega 6 oils (olive or grape-seed oils), and is bogged down by bad fats such as trans fatty acids, any hydrogenated fats such as margarine, and many of the omega 6 oils such as corn, safflower, and Canola oil. Make sure you are getting enough good omega 3 oils such as those found in fish or fish oils. When cooking, use extra virgin olive oil. Olive oil is a very stable fat, handles cooking well, and has multiple research studies supporting its health benefits.

Okay ladies, see how OCD I am? I guess it's better to be compulsive about finding out everything in the world about NOT drinking, than figuring out - once again - how to make today's hangover feel better. I promise I'll keep it much shorter from now one! Now I need to get ready for work and wake up the rest of the family.

Camiol, just remember that you have already given your body a wonderful break over the past several weeks, and it hasn't been a whole month of each night drinking more than you wanted!!!! You are doing great, even with an occasional lapse. Focus on all the good things and strong days you have had since we met. Every time you lapse, you are coming back from a point of greater wisdom. Not that it's any easier the next time, but you are defining and refiningyour personal limits and triggers, which only you can do. It will eventually make the difference. Hope & Marylizy, you also know that's true. A lapse doesn't mean you are starting over. It means you have reached the next jump-off point.

I am finding that two huge, HUGE things for me are not to have alcohol in the house, and to carry a breathalyzer. After many years of regular hangovers, I finally figured that out. It has been four weeks now without a binge or a hangover, which may be a record for me. I know I wouldn't be able to keep my drinking in moderation without those two tools.

A supposed key to getting over some of the symptoms of not-drinking include replacing sugars with high-quality protein, vegetables and complex carbohydrates. Not like this is blinding news for any of us (or that I'm particularly good at it!), but this is all good sense, IMO. And some everyday non-exotic supplements that are also supposed to help (after you check in with your doctorblablabla, and in order of importance) are antioxidants, B-complex vitamins, Vitamin C, calcium, Vitamin E, zinc, manganese and selenium, and Vitamin D3.

As for foods, these are the healthy ones that are supposed to help in particular (I don't know how or why) with alcohol cravings: Sunflower seeds, raw almonds & cashews, dates, bananas, carrots, apples, blueberries. It probably has to do with antioxidants and replacing vitamins & minerals. And to wrap it up before I get ready for work, here's the lowdown on detox foods that are supposed to "cleanse" the liver:

The less chemical additives, preservatives, and processing the food goes through, the better the food is for you and your liver. Pick the apple over apple juice, or the natural apple juice over, say, an apple-flavored product. The same is true of other foods.

Try to eat something crunchy with every meal. This does not mean a food that has been artificially crunchified, like potato chips, but foods with a natural crunch to them, including fruits, vegetables, and greens that haven't been cooked.

The importance of fiber to the liver cleanse process cannot be overstated. When your liver wants to get rid of a toxin, it dumps it into the digestive tract. If there is enough fiber around, this toxin is taken out of your body with your next bowel movement; if not, these toxins can be reabsorbed into the blood stream and the liver has to deal with them again. Whole grains are a great source of fiber, as are many fruits and vegetables. If eating enough fiber is not possible, use a natural fiber supplement. High fiber is one of the most important changes you can make to your diet!

Make sure you are also getting some protein. The liver needs to have enough proteins in order to function well. Good sources of proteins include beans, nuts, and fish, and small portions of beef, chicken and other animal proteins.<

Hi everyone....Vincenza I think feeling human again would bring me back to where I was a couple years ago when alcohol wasn't an issue for me.  I want to feel healthy, less dragged down and not spend every waking moment thinking about what I'm going to drink tonight.  I hate that.  Thank you for your advice, I will try to stick to one day at a time and remind myself that for today, I will not drink.

I can't say I'm beating myself up, it's more being very disappointed in my behavior and wanting to change so badly, yet finding it very difficult at this time.  Hope...work stress is very bad right now and it certainly isn't helping me in trying to stop drinking.  I'm not sure that this week will be any better, but I am promising myself to find better ways to cope with the stress and not let booze be the temporary fix.  I'm happy to hear you're doing ok Hope...I was a bit concerned that we hadn't heard from you.  I hope to see BP post a comment very soon.

Turquoise as always you have very wise advice and I love the Information you're providing for us.  I think for now even 30 days is looking too far ahead.  Today is as far as I can envision, and I hope by viewing this journey on a day by day basis, I can get back to my former life.  I hate feeling like crap, and even if I don't drink to the point of intoxication, I still feel the effects of what alcohol is doing to me both physically and emotionally.

Well I'm off to work.  Thank you all for your encouraging words.  I appreciate your kind words and support.  Hopefully with all of you on my team, I will beat this monster.

Morning and happy Monday. Well I did buy a bottle of wine yesterday and drank half of it last night. The funny thing is it did not even taste that good to me and I hated the feeling of getting high...I have gone 11 days without drinking and have to say I am liking the sober feeling much better than the drunk one. I guess that is a good thing. I am back to one day at a time and feel I am stronger now that I have tried drinking and have not enjoyed it all that much.I hope you all have a wonderful week.

Hello dear friens, thanks for your concern. Everything is OK on my site. Thursday was the last evening I had drinks, and I had more then I planned, since I started earlier then planned, but not like before. 3 bears and 3 wines.. I wasnt hangover on Friday since I had so many water before sleeping.  Friday me and my husband went to my hometown to see my parents, pick up my daughter and spend a weekend with my cousins. It was a lovely family reunion and I ate sooooooo much, from  my mother's famous recipies and local food. Now I'm back, in the office starting the week. Sorry for not checking in for days, I was trying to follow your posts but couldnt write anything. Since I laid of one of my subordinates last week, all our team is more busy with the tasks that we shared which she was doing before leaving. What I learnt from my Thursday night is I'm always screewing up, when I'm spending the night unplanned. So I will plan each and everynight this week, to be able to stay abstinent. Last week I went to sports club and made both cardio exercises and pilates after work. It made me feel very good and relaxed. Since right after work hours are the most risky situations for me, I'm planning to continiou exercising this week. This is the replacement technique I will try this week.

Camiol, one day at a time is the most beneficial handling way working for me. Pls dont blame yourself for last week, but you may try smth new this week. You spent a very stressful week because of work and stress always decreases our stamina, handling ability.. even affects our immune system. I hope you will spend a better week this week.

Turquoiase.. I appreciate your research motivation and thank you very much sharing this valuable information. The information you share with us is eye opener for all of us I think. You may be very right that we need to spend at least 30 days abstinent before starting a moderate drinking life. When I check my feelings regarding moderate drinking, I catch myself dreaming of being abstinent for 1-2 weeks and spending a night with 9 drinks 1 night !!!! at least once in a month which is totally inappropriate.. I2m sure you are not meaning 9 drinks at the same night in a week is acceptable:)

I'll try to check in more and keep you posted this week.. I hope BP and others are also come back.. I wish all of you a good week..

Camiol, at least you are checking in! I'm so glad you didn't decide NOT to come and talk to us. We haven't heard from Hope and BP in a couple of days, and I want to let them know that it doesn't matter if they've been doing well or having a hard time -- we are here. I hope they stop in to say hi.

One day at a time is the ONLY way to handle this. I had one glass of wine last night (and kept my BAC at .03) and didn't drink at all today. However, if there had been wine in the house, I know I would have had a glass or two today. I really wanted one. Not having it available is a huge thing for me. It's much easier to control myself when I go out to dinner, because the evening is planned. Hanging around the house all weekend is always when 1 drink become 3 becomes 8....

One of the things that I have seen about moderation is to 'Start with 30'. The idea is to start with 30 days sober, because 1) 30 days is easier to envision than the rest of your life; and 2) that breaks your usual habits of drinking every evening all evening. At the end of the '30' you can try do do "moderation", which for women is generally 2 drinks or less in a day, and nine drinks or less - I think - in a week.... Drinking more than that is no longer moderation.

Anyway, I have a whiny 6-year-old demanding my attention, so I gotta go. Hang in there!

Hi Camiol,

Yes, really try to focus only on one day at a time.  When you catch yourself wondering or worrying about how long you can go without alcohol, ground your thoughts by reminding yourself that you only need to not drinking today - and then repeat that thought and those words tomorrow and the next day, etc...

It sounds like you are getting ahead of yourself and overwhelmed with how to feel 'normal'.  What does that mean to you?  How would you describe what it is to "feel human again"?

Don't beat yourself up over drinking too much last night.  Instead, what can or did you learn from the experience that can help you change your outlook or your choices for today?
