Withdrawal Symptoms

Seriously,  if you're a daily drinker, and decide to quit, talk to a Dr. and be brutally honest about how much and how long you've been drinking.   Not to scare anyone, but alchol withdrawal can be dangerous.   I've had two withdrawal seizures, including one where I put my head through a wall.    I've needed medical detox several times.

After I lost my job in 06 due to drinking, I went on a very dangerous 5 day bender.   I came to sometime in the early morning of Christmas Day.   I knew I was going to be in trouble on the detox and didn't want to risk another seizure, so I got my landlady to drive me to the ER at around 9 am.   I spent the entire day hooked up to monitors that kept going off because none of my vital signs were normal.   My blood pressure and heart rate both skyrocketed.   I was shaking so bad I couldn't hold a glass.   After spending 14 hours in the ER, they decided to admit me to the hospital & I was in for 4 days.   It took 3 days for my blood pressure to get down to a normal level.   I'm just lucky I din't die.

Withdrawal is nothing to mess around with, especially if you've been a heavy drinker like I was.  It's worth a bit of embarrassment to get help.

As you prepare to make changes to your lifestyle you may be wondering if you should totally abstain from alcohol or just cut back. When you do plan on making the transition, whatever it may be we suggest talking to your health care practitioner about your plans. She/He will help you create a plan based on your drinking habits.

You may experience some withdrawals when you are ready to cut down or quit drinking. Withdrawal symptoms you may experience are:
- anxiety
- shaky hands
- sweating
- difficulty sleeping

These symptoms may be uncomfortable but they should not last for long. Seek support from family, friends or right here, in the AHC support group.

If you experience severe withdrawal symptoms, go to the emergency room as soon as possible. These symptoms include:
- strong shakes: you can’t hold a glass without spilling its contents
- excessive sweating and feeling very hot
- desire to vomit after meals
- lack of appetite or fear of eating
- mental confusion: ie. losing track of time or not knowing where you are
- hallucinations: hearing, seeing or feeling things that aren’t there.
